Indian HC moved by Malaysian firm for stalling release of film "Darbar"

Chennai, Dec 30 (PTI) A Malaysia-based film distribution company has approached the Madras High Court seeking to stall release of superstar Rajinikanth's Tamil film 'Darbar' claiming the producer Lyca Productions owed it Rs 23.70 crore on account of business transactions.

When the civil suit filed by DMY Creations SDN BHD came up for hearing, vacation judge Justice M Govindaraj adjourned it to January 2 enabling the counsel for Lyca Productionsto get instructions.

India: One more arrested in gang-rape of minor girl on birthday

Coimbatore, Dec 28 (PTI) One more person was arrested here on Saturday in connection with the gang-rape of a 17-year old girl on her birthday, police said.

Already, six people were arrested for the crime after being booked under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and goondas Act, and lodged in the central jail, the police said.

On information given by the six, personnel from all- woman police station arrested Manikandan.

13 Indian fishermen arrested by Lankan navy

Rameswaram, Dec 28 (PTI): Thirteen fishermen from Tamil Nadu, fishing at Nedunthivu off Sri Lankan coast, were arrested by the navy of the island nation on Saturday for allegedly poaching in its territorial waters.

According to the assistant director of Fisheries Kumaresan, the Lankan naval men took the fishermen from Pudukottai and their three mechanised boats and lodged them in Kangesanthurai in Jaffna.

India: Anti-CAA protests continue in TN

Chennai, Dec 26 (PTI) Protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act continued here on Thursday, with an assorted group of activists including writers staging a demonstration against the legislation.

Writers and social activists participated in the demo against the amended Citizenship Act, and were joined by various political parties and organisations opposed to the CAA.

India: DMK, allies take out rally against CAA in Chennai

Chennai, Dec 23 (PTI) DMK and its allies on Monday took out a protest rally here against the amendment to the Citizenship Act and seeking its withdrawal.

DMK president M K Stalin along with leaders of allies, including senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, MDMK chief Vaiko and state unit leaders of the Left parties were marching from downtown Egmore towards the Rajarathinam Stadium, a distance of about two km.

India: Haasan now slams proposed NRC, vows to fight till "this tyranny goes off"

Chennai, Dec 21 (PTI) Actor-politician Kamal Haasan, who has come out against the citizenship law, on Saturday slammed the proposed NRC, saying said one's ancestry cannot be denied based on documentary evidence or lack of it and vowed to fight till "this tyranny goes off".

Days after calling the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 'autocratic' and 'draconian', the Makkal Needhi Maiam chief said it was high time the NDA government realised that majority in Parliament doesn't give it authority to "destroy the fabric of my nation".

India: BJP holds pro-CAA demonstrations in Chennai, Coimbatore

Chennai, Dec 20 (PTI) The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit on Friday held state-wide pro-Citizenship Amendment Act demonstrations and hit out at opposition parties, including DMK, for 'misleading' Muslims, among others.

Around 500 BJP cadres converged at Valluvarkottam here holding party flags and placards which read "I support CAA."

They raised slogans like 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'we will strengthen India's democracy.'

India: Protests against Citizenship law continue in TN, Kerala

Chennai, Dec 21 (PTI) Scores of CPI-M activists tried to block trains at the railway station here but were foiled by police, as protests continued against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Saturday in parts of Tamil Nadu.

Outfits affiliated to the CPI(M) including the Democratic Youth Federation of India, and Students Federation of India attempted to block trains at the MGR Central Railway Station complex here.

India: Cops enter Madras varsity as students continue protest against Citizenship Act

Chennai, Dec 17 (PTI) A section of the students of the Madras University continued their protest for the second day on Tuesday against the amendment to the Citizenship Act, as police entered the campus.

Defiant students said they will continue their agitation "through the night."

While police personnel who entered the campus said they were for the "safety of the students," the protesters alleged two of the students were picked up by police.
