BJP functionary hacked to death

Tiruchirappalli, Jan 27 (PTI) A BJP functionary was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at a market here on Monday, police said

Vijaya Raghu (40), a zonal secretary of the party at Palakarai, was working in the market area when a group of the assailants surrounded him and killed him before fleeing the scene, the police said.

CCTV footage is being examined to identify and catch the culprits, they said, adding that a case has been registered.

India: "Troubled" to see Omar Abdullah's picture, says Stalin

Chennai, Jan 27 (PTI) DMK President M K Stalin on Monday said he was deeply troubled to see a photograph of National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in which he sports an overgrown beard and demanded the Centre immediately release all leaders in detention in Jammu and Kashmir.

The top Dravidian party leader took to Twitter to demand his release and said "Deeply troubled to see this picture of @OmarAbdullah" and tagged three images of the Kashmiri leader.

iNDIA: Citing SC judgment, HC orders family pension to 2nd wife

Chennai,Jan 25 (PTI) Coming to the rescue of the second wife of a deceased doctor, the Madras High Court has directed the Director of Local Fund Audits to sanction family pension with effect from the date of her husband's death.

C Sarojini Devi had challenged the order of the Director of Local fund Audits, Chennai, refusing to grant family pension on the ground that the marriage between the petitioner and doctor, a deceased government employee, was not valid and she cannot be considered to be the legal representative.

India: Thowheed Jamath holds anti-CAA protests across Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Jan 25 (PTI) Scores of members of Muslim outfit Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath took out protest marches across Tamil Nadu on Saturday against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The protesters gathered in front of the Chennai Collectorate holding placards and TNTJ flags and raised slogans demanding withdrawal of the Act.

Tight security was in place to ensure no untoward incidents took place, police sources said.

India: Man get life sentense for sexually assaulting minor girl

Coimbatore, Jan 20 (PTI) A court here on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor girl two years ago.

The prosecution case was that Sathish Kumar, hailing from a village near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, had abducted the 16-year-old girl in February, 2017, took her to a lonely place and sexually assaulted her as the girl had rejected his love proposal.

India: Man gets four terms of life sentence for raping minor daughter

Thanjavur(TN), Jan 7 (PTI) A 31-year-old man, who raped his minor daughter in the district, was handed four terms of life sentence by a courthere on Tuesday.

Mahila court judge Ezhilarasi sentenced Kumar to four terms of life imprisonment which should run continuouslywith a clear order that he should not be released from the prison till his death.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 4,500 on the convict.

Besides, he was sentenced to six months of imprisonment for threatening to kill his daughter.

India: Dual citizenship for Tamil refugees is possible: TN govt

Chennai, Jan 8 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday told the Assembly that dual citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees was "possible" and wanted the Centre to ink a pact with the island nation to facilitate it.

Raising the issue, Leader of Opposition, M K Stalin said the government has been harping on giving dual citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu and wanted to know if consultations were made with legal experts on its feasibility.

India: Bank employee accused of sexually assaulting minor girl

Coimbatore, Jan 2 (PTI) A bank employee was arrested on Thursday on the charge of sexually abusing a minor girl at her house here, police said.

Ramkumar, working in a nationalised bank, had entered the 14-year-old girl's house a couple of days ago when she was alone and sexually assaulted her, the police said.

India: BJP stages protest seeking Tamil orator's arrest

Chennai, Jan 1 (PTI): BJP cadres, led by senior state party leaders, staged a protest demonstration here on Wednesday, demanding the arrest of a Tamil orator for his 'provocative' remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The protesters, including BJP National Secretary H Raja, raised slogans against Nellai Kannan for his alleged remarks, and they were were detained by police.
