India: DMK protests against CAB, Udhayanidhi Stalin detained

Chennai, Dec 13 (PTI) DMK youth wing leader Udhayanidhi Stalin and scores of party workers were detained on Friday when they tried to stage a road blockade here while holding a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, police said.

Udhayanidhi, son of DMK president M K Stalin, led the protest at Saidapet.

Many activists were seen tearing copies of the Bill, which proposes citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

India: Centre wanted to wreck my mental strength: Chidambaram

Chennai, Dec 7 (PTI) Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday accused the Central government of trying to wreck his mental strength by imprisoning him in the INX Media case.

The former Minister, who spent 106 days in Delhi's Tihar jail, however, did not explicitly mention the case against him filed by the Enforcement Directorate or the CBI.

India: Cop gets 5 years RI for sexually harassing minor girl

Ramanathapuram (TN), Dec 5 (PTI) A police head constable was on Thursday sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by a court here for sexually harassing a 10-year old girl, daughter of his sub-inspector friend last year.

Ramanathapuram MahilaCourt judge Baghavathi Ammal sentenced Saravanan to five years RI and also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000.

India: Unclaimed gold worth Rs 1 crore found under plane seat

Chennai, Nov 29 (PTI): Unclaimed gold bars worth Rs 1 crore, concealed under the seat of an aircraft which had arrived from Colombo, were seized at the airport here, Customs authorities said on Friday.

Acting on specific inputs that the precious metal was being smuggled by a passenger on Thursday, a search was made on the plane after it came here from the Lankan capital.

India: Minor girl out to celebrate birthday raped: 4 arrested

Coimbatore, Nov 30 (PTI) A minor girl out with her male friend in a park here to celebrate her birthday was allegedly raped by six men, four of whom have been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The 11th standard student had gone to a park with her male friend on November 26 and were returning home at around 9 PM when the gang accosted them, assaulted the man, dragged her to a secluded place and raped her.

They also videographed the incident, police said

India: 7000 engineers, graduates and diploma-holders apply for 549 sanitary workers

Coimbatore; 29 Nov 2019 (UMM): About 7000 engineers, graduates and diploma-holders have applied for 549 vacancies of grade-1 sanitary workers in the city Corporation.

According to a Hindustan Times report Nov 28, the corporation had called for applications and 7,000 applicants appeared for the three-day interview and verification of certificates which began on Wednesday, official sources said.

India: PMK condemns attack on Indian fishermen by Lankan Navy

Chennai, Nov 22 (PTI) NDA constituent PMK on Friday condemned the latest instance of Sri Lankan Navy targeting Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu, saying how long will India remain a witness to the "excess" by that country's naval force.

More than 2,500 fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet on Wednesday.

Rameswaram(TN), Nov 19 (PTI) More than 2,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader said here on Tuesday.

The fishermen from this island town had ventured into the sea on Monday evening in 540 boats and were fishing off Katchatheevu when a team of Sri Lankan naval personnel came to the spot and attacked before driving them away, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja alleged.

Chennai, Nov 4 (PTI) Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland showcased its wide range of Bharat Stage VI trucks and buses in Chennai on Monday.

The city-based commercial vehicle major has become the first Indian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to meet the BS-VI emission norms across the full range of heavy-duty trucks of 16.2 tonne or above.

"..in focus with our aspirations of being among the top 10 global commercial vehicle maker, we have yet again come up with an innovative technology to address the BS VI norms," Leyland chairman Dheeraj G Hinduja said here.

Over 3,000 Indian fishermen chased away by Lankan Navy

Rameswaram (TN), Nov 3 (PTI) Over 3,000 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were allegedly chased away by Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday when they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader said here.

The naval personnel also snapped fishing nets of several boats.

The fishermen from this island town had ventured into the sea in over 500 boats and were catching fish near Katchatheevu when the Lankan Navy personnel came to the spot, cut the nets and chased them away, State fishermen association President N Devadoss said.
