Unilever sells Ben & Jerry's Israeli business to defuse row

29 June 2022; MEMO: Unilever, on Wednesday, sold its Ben & Jerry's ice cream business in Israel to its local licensee for an undisclosed sum, aiming to smooth over a potentially damaging diplomatic row, Reuters reports.

The deal comes after the US ice cream brand announced last year it would stop marketing products in the occupied Palestinian territories, saying that selling there was "inconsistent" with its values.

Israel Prime Minister Bennett says he will not run in upcoming election

29 June 2022; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, told members of his Yamina party that he will not be running in the upcoming election, a statement from his spokesperson said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

The statement, which came ahead of a Knesset vote to dissolve parliament and prepare for new elections, said Bennett would retain his position as alternate Prime Minister after his coalition partner, Yair Lapid, takes over as head of government.

Saudi Arabia population declines after expats left during Covid pandemic

29 June 2022; MEMO: Saudi Arabia's population has decreased by at least 2.6 per cent over the past two years, due to the significant amount of expatriate workers who left the Kingdom throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a report published today by the Kingdom's General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), it stated that the country's population in the middle of last year was 34.1 million, down from 35 million in the middle of 2020.

Turkey detects first case of monkeypox

29 June 2022; MEMO: Turkey has detected its first case of monkeypox in a 37-year-old patient who is in isolation, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said today, Reuters reports.

The virus has been identified in more than 50 new countries outside the countries in Africa where it is endemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says cases are also rising in those countries, calling for testing to be ramped up.

Israel seeks US approval for sale of laser defence system to Saudi Arabia, UAE

The news website reported that Israel wanted to sell its laser defence technology to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, but it is waiting for Biden's visit to ask him to okay the measure.

Turkish media hails Erdogan's 'victory' deal to lift NATO veto

ISTANBUL, June 29 (Reuters) - Pro-government Turkish media lauded a deal to allow Finland and Sweden to join NATO as a triumph for President Tayyip Erdogan, saying on Wednesday he had wrested concrete gains from the West in the country's fight against terrorism.

The 11th hour agreement on Tuesday, which caught many by surprise, lifted Ankara's veto over the Nordic states' membership bids. It ended a weeks-long dispute that tested the defence alliance's unity against Russia's invasion of Ukraine ahead of this week's NATO summit in Madrid.

Iran report: Nuclear talks with US end without deal in Qatar

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Indirect negotiations between Iran and the U.S. over Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers have ended without breaking a deadlock over the talks, a semiofficial Iranian news agency reported Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department and the European Union, which is mediating the talks in Qatar, did not immediately acknowledge the end of the negotiations in Doha.

Iran is dominant rival to Israel in cyberwarfare, Israel cyber chief admits

28 June 2022; MEMO: Israel's cybersecurity chief has admitted that Iran – along with the militant groups, Hezbollah and Hamas – is its most dominant rival in regards to cyberwarfare, as the cyberwar between Tehran and Tel Aviv continues to escalate.

The Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) head, Gaby Portnoy, made the comments at Tel Aviv University's Cyber Week today, saying that "We see them, we know how they work and we are there."

Lebanon to host Arab League meeting at weekend

28 June 2022; MEMO: A delegation from Arab League countries will travel to Lebanon for a two-day gathering that includes meetings with the crisis-ridden country's top officials, Beirut's caretaker government said on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, said leaders including Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, would arrive in Lebanon on Friday.
