India: Farmer attempts self-immolation at MP CM's meet in Dewas

Dewas (MP), Jan 27 (PTI) A 48-year-old man claiming to be a farmer attempted self-immolation at a meeting addressed by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan here on Wednesday, police said.

The incident triggered panic at the meeting, but police personnel immediately took the man into custody, before he could light a match after pouring kerosene on himself, an official said.

The man was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment, he added.

India: MP government trying to crush farmers' voice: Kamal Nath

Indore, Jan 24 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath on Sunday hit out at the BJP dispensation in the state for using force on his party workers during a protest in Bhopal against the Centre's three new farm laws, and alleged that the government was trying to crush the voice of farmers.

He also claimed that the new laws will privatise the agriculture sector and farmers will become bonded labourers of big industrialists.

Nath led a farmers' tractor rally in Depalpur, about 50 kms from Indore, to protest against the new agri laws.

India: Even a 15-year-old girl can reproduce: MP Congress MLA

Bhopal, Jan 13 (PTI) Targeting Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over his demand for a debate on parity in the legal age of marriage for both the sexes, former Congress minister Sajjan Singh Verma on Wednesday said even a 15-year-old girl is capable of reproduction, drawing a sharp reaction from the BJP which demanded his apology.

As Verma's remarks caused uproar, the Congress said the BJP was bent on making an issue out of nothing.

India: Study centre named for Nathuram Godse closed in MP

Gwalior (MP), Jan 12 (PTI) The Hindu Mahasabha on Tuesday closed a study centre named for Nathuram Godse following an intervention by the district administration.

The "Gyanshaala" or study centre, opened at the Mahasabha's office in Daulatganj area here two days ago, had created controversy as it was named for Godse, Mahatma Gandhi's assassin.

Additional District Magistrate Kishore Kanyal said that after learning about the study centre, preventive orders under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure were imposed in Daulatganj area.

India: Hindu Mahasabha opens study centre on Nathuram Godse in MP

Gwalior (MP), Jan 10 (PTI) The Hindu Mahasabha on Sunday opened a "gyanshala" or a study centre on Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, at its office here in Madhya Pradesh to 'educate' youngsters on the Partition of India and to spread awareness about historical personalities like Maharana Pratap, a functionary said.

India: Bird flu cases confirmed in 13 MP districts so far

Bhopal, Jan 10 (PTI) Bird flu cases have so far been confirmed in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh, while around 1,100 crows and other wild birds have been found dead across 27 districts since the flu virus was first detected in the state last month, a government official said on Sunday.

A poultry market in Agar Malwa district has been shut for a week after the bird flu virus was detected in one sample there, the official from the public relations department said.

India: Over 400 chickens culled in Indore amid bird flu scare

Indore (MP), Jan 8 (PTI) Nearly 450 chickens were culled in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city in the last 24 hours to prevent the spread of bird flu, a civic official said on Friday evening.

The Madhya Pradesh government has already ordered closure of poultry shops in Neemuch and Indore districts for a week after bird flu infection was found in some chickens.

"Nearly 450 poultry birds were culled and buried as per guidelines. We have also shut chicken shops in the city," municipal health officer Uttam Yadav said.

India: Bird flu: chicken shops closed in two MP districts

Bhopal, Jan 7 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered closure of poultry shops in Neemuch and Indore districts for a week after bird flu infection was found among chickens in these areas, officials said on Thursday.

Avian influenza or bird flu virus was found in samples of crow carcasses from seven districts and in chicken samples from Neemuch and Indore, said the state veterinary department in an advisory.

India: 50 more crows found dead in Jodhpur

Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Jan 6 (PTI) About 50 more crows were reported dead in Setrawa and Phalodi areas in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district on Wednesday and samples extracted to ascertain if bird flu caused the deaths, officials said.

Of the new bird deaths, 27 were reported in Setrawa near Jodhpur. Villagers informed officials about the deaths of crows. The carcasses were disposed of after taking a sample, they said.

Some crows were also found dead in Keru village, adjoining Jodhpur on Wednesday.

India: 155 dead crows detected with bird flu in Indore

Indore, Jan 5 (PTI) A total of 155 dead crows in Indore in Madhya Pradesh have been found with the H5N8 bird flu virus since the pathogen was first detected here a week back, an official said on Tuesday.

Veterinary Department Deputy Director Pramod Sharma said 155 crows were detected with the H5N8 virus (a strain of avian influenza) in the Residency area here in the last eight days.

The deadly avian influenza had not been found in any other bird species apart from crows here so far, he said.
