'Peace in Libya will achieve $30bn in gains for Algeria,' says UN report

24 June 2021; MEMO: Peace in Libya will benefit neighbouring Algeria to the tune of $30 billion by 2025, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)has estimated.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ESCWA said that according to a study it conducted entitled 'Benefits of Peace in Libya: Neighbouring Countries and Beyond', the economic gains in Egypt will reach nearly $100 billion, $30 billion in Algeria, and nearly $22 billion in Sudan by 2025.

Coastal road linking western, eastern Libya reopens

TRIPOLI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah on Sunday announced reopening the coastal road that links western and eastern Libya after two years of closure.

Since April 2019, when a war between the eastern-based army and the former UN-backed government of national accord erupted in and around the capital Tripoli, the road has been closed.

Libya's Haftar closes border with Algeria

20 June 2021; MEMO: Forces loyal to Libya's eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar have closed the border with Algeria, they said on Sunday, after major deployments of his forces to the south underscored his continued role despite efforts to unify the country, reports Reuters.

Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) last week sent troops into the southern city of Sebha, which was already allied to eastern forces, and then on Saturday to a southern border crossing with Algeria.

Libyan experts review draft law on combating violence against women

TRIPOLI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Libyan experts have hold a three-day discussion to review a draft law on combating violence against women, said the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

A group of lawyers, judges, activists and human rights defenders met in Tunis from Wednesday to Friday "to review the draft law on Combating Violence Against Women," the UN agency said in a statement.

Haftar sends reinforcements to south Libya

18 June 2021; MEMO: Commander of the Sabha military region in southern Libya, Ahmad Al-Utaybi, revealed that armed troops affiliated with the militias of retired General Khalifa Haftar arrived in the city of Sabha from the east.

Al-Utaybi said in a statement to Al-Quds Al-Arabi that they included hundreds of armed vehicles.

Turkish defense minister reiterates support to Libya during visit

13 June 2021; MEMO: Turkey's national defense minister has reiterated his country's support for Libya during a high-level visit to the country ahead of Monday's NATO summit, reports Anadolu Agency.

Hulusi Akar met with Libyan military officials on Saturday and visited Libya Task Group Command.

Addressing the personnel at the command, Akar emphasized the long-standing friendly ties between Turkey and Libya.

More than 1,000 illegal migrants returned to Libya: UNHCR

TRIPOLI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Sunday that more than 1,000 illegal migrants were returned to Libya.

"Record number in returns of refugees and migrants to Libya today. Over 1,000 persons were returned in two operations in Zawiya and three others in Tripoli," the UNHCR tweeted earlier Sunday.

Libya, Italy, Malta, EU discuss cooperation against illegal immigration

TRIPOLI, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Libyan Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush on Friday met with his Italian and Maltese counterparts and the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement to discuss the cooperation against the illegal immigration.

"Libya has been suffering from the illegal immigration," al-Mangoush said at a joint press conference following the meeting, adding she and the other three all agreed to secure the southern Libyan border from illegal immigration with the assistance of the European Union.

Libya: 'Turkey, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia have the best chances to participate in reconstruction'

25 May 2021; MEMO: Libya announced that Egyptian, Turkish, Italian, German and Tunisian companies have the biggest chance of taking part in the reconstruction of the country.

In statements the Minister of State for Economic Affairs, Salama Al-Ghwail, said: "The Egyptian, Turkish, Italian, German and Tunisian companies will have the best chances to participate in the reconstruction projects in Libya."
