India: HM Amit Shah extends Eid greetings

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday extended his Eid greetings to people and hoped that the occasion will bring peace and prosperity to the society.

Eid al-Adha, also called the festival of sacrifice, is being celebrated on Saturday.

"Greetings on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. May this day bring peace, harmony and prosperity in our society," Shah tweeted.

India: Man held for raping 15-yr-old girl in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Aug 1 (PTI) Police have arrested one of the three men accused of raping a 15-year-old girl here, an official said on Saturday.

According to an FIR registered in the case, the accused abducted the minor on Thursday when she had gone out of her house to throw garbage in the village dump yard.

Indian army soldier killed in firing by Pak along LoC

Jammu, Aug 1 (PTI) An Indian Army jawan was killed when Pakistan opened heavy fire on forward posts along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Saturday, a defence spokesperson said.

He said the Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire agreement by opening fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri sector.

India: Death toll in Punjab spurious liquor tragedy rises to 62

Chandigarh, Aug 1 (PTI) The death toll in the Punjab spurious liquor tragedy rose to 62 on Saturday as 23 more casualties were reported from the state's Tarn Taran district, officials said.

Till Friday night, the district had reported 19 deaths.

In Tarn Taran, the death toll has reached 42, Deputy Commissioner Kulwant Singh told PTI on Saturday, adding that the maximum deaths took place in the Sadar and city areas of district.

India records highest one-day jump of 57,118 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) India's COVID-19 tally reached 16,95,988 on Saturday with a record single-day increase of 57,118 cases, while the recoveries surged to 10,94,374, according to the Union Health Ministry data

India: Woman gangraped in UP's Bulandshahr

Bulandshahr, Jul 31 (PTI) A 50-year-old woman was allegedly raped by five men in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district, police said on Friday.

A case under Section 376 D (gangrape) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against two identified and three unknown persons on the basis of the complaint filed by the woman's brother-in-law, they said.

According to the complaint, the incident took place on Thursday night when the widow went to an agricultural field near her house, police said.

India: Ashok Gehlot camp MLAs to be shifted to Jaisalmer

Jaipur, Jul 31 (PTI) The MLAs of the Ashok Gehlot camp, who have been staying at a hotel on the Jaipur- Delhi Highway amid the ongoing political crisis in Rajasthan, will be shifted to Jaisalmer on Friday, Congress sources said.

The MLAs will be shifted after the Congress Legislature Party meeting in the hotel, the sources said, adding, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will address the MLAs.

India: Saifuddin Soz "must be released at once" Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Calling for immediate release of Jammu and Kashmir Congress leader Saifuddin Soz, Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said "illegal" detention of political leaders damages the fabric of the country.

Soz has alleged that he has been detained in his house since August 5 last year, when the Centre revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The illegal detention of political leaders with absolutely no basis damages the fabric of our nation. Mr Soz must be released at once," Gandhi tweeted.

India: CRPF jawan held for raping tribal woman in Chhattisgarh

Sukma, Jul 30 (PTI) A 21-year-old tribal woman was allegedly raped by a CRPF jawan in Chhattisgarhs insurgency- hit Sukma district, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Dulichand, a constable, was arrested on Thursday based on a complaint lodged by the victim and her parents, Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P said.

The alleged incident took place near Dubbakota camp of the paramilitary forces under Dornapal police station area on July 27 when the victim had gone to graze cattle, he said.

India: Minor raped by 3 men in Uttar Pradesh

Muzaffarnagar, July 31 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar, police said on Friday.

According to a complaint lodged by the girl's family, the accused abducted the minor on Thursday when she had gone out of her house to throw garbage in the village dump yard.

They allegedly took the girl to a forest and took turns to rape her, SHO of Bhopa police station Sanjeev Kumar said, adding that one of the three men recorded a video of the incident.
