KABUL, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed in separate bomb blasts in Afghanistan's southern Helmand and eastern Nangarhar provinces on Saturday, local officials said.

In Helmand's provincial capital Lashkar Gah, a car bombing killed Mahmood Sadat, an attorney of provincial Directorate of National Intelligence Agency and one of his protectors, a local government spokesman, Omar Zwak told Xinhua.

Earlier reports said Sadat and two security guards were killed in the blast which damaged several buildings and vehicles near the city's main police station.

FAIZABAD, Feb 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) – At least 12 militants have been confirmed dead and the Taliban attempts to gain ground in Nasai district of the northern Badakhshan province were repulsed, said an army statement, released today.

A total of 12 Taliban militants, including some foreign nationals, have been killed in Nasai district, over the past 24 hours, the statement said.

Taliban key commander, Qari Hafiz, is also among those killed in the clash, the statement said.

LASHKAR GAH, Feb 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) – A total of eight militants have been confirmed dead, as fighting planes struck a Taliban hideout in Nahr-e-Saraj district, of the southern Helmand province, yesterday, said an army statement, released here today.

Acting on a tip off, the fighting planes targeted a hideout of Taliban militants, in Nahr-e-Saraj district late yesterday, killing eight insurgents on the spot, the statement said.

KABUL, Feb 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) – At least five people, including two police officers and a woman, were killed and two other people wounded, in three explosions, targeting three cars in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, today, the capital police confirmed.

The blasts came in the morning rush hour. The first explosion occurred roughly at 8:00 a.m. local time, while the second, 15 minutes later, Kabul police spokesman, Ferdaus Faramarz, said.

KABUL, Feb 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) – An explosion in the Afghan capital, yesterday, killed two lecturers at the Kabul University, after a bomb attached to a car they were in, went off, a police spokesman said.

The attack took place around noon near the university, said Kabul police spokesman, Ferdaws Faramarz. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The two lecturers, Mubasher Muslimyar and Marouf Rasikh, taught at the university’s Islamic studies faculty, according to an Afghan official.

HERAT, Afghanistan (AP) — A fuel tanker exploded Saturday at the Islam Qala crossing in Afghanistan’s western Herat province on the Iranian border, injuring at least seven people and causing a massive fire that consumed more than 500 trucks carrying natural gas and fuel, according to Afghan officials and Iranian state media.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the blast. Wahid Qatali, Herat’s provincial governor, said Afghan first responders did not have the means to put out the huge fire and had requested support from Iran in the form of firefighting aircraft.

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants' attack on a military base in Khanabad district of the northern Kunduz province was repulsed with five killed, an army officer in the province said Tuesday.

A group of militants, according to the officer Abdul Razeq, launched an attack on an army base at the district at 07:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, triggering a heavy fighting with the militants fleeing away after leaving five bodies behind.

Two more militants and two soldiers were injured in the fighting, he said.

MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least six Taliban militants were killed and 14 others wounded when Afghan Air Force struck their positions in the country's northern Faryab province, a local army source confirmed on Monday.

"The strikes were conducted in surrounding areas of Qaysar and Shirin Tagab districts on Sunday. The precise strikes left six militants dead and wounded 14 others," Hanif Rezai, spokesman of army's Corps 209 Shaheen based in the region, told Xinhua.

KABUL, Feb 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Afghanistan’s national intelligence agency personnel, arrested another man, allegedly being involved in a terror attack on Kabul University, late last year, Afghan First Vice-President, Amrullah Saleh, confirmed yesterday.

“Another key element behind the Kabul University vicious attack, Mohammad Omar, who was under prosecution, was arrested in Police District 16, of the Kabul city,” Saleh, who is heading a security team in-charge of security of the capital, wrote, on his official Facebook account.
