Afghanistan: Gun battle kills 6 including 2 policemen in northern province

KUNDUZ (Afghanistan), Nov 4 (NNN-Xinhua) — Two policemen and four Taliban militants have been confirmed dead as clashes erupted in Chardara district of Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province on Wednesday, district governor Hafizullah Safi said.

“A group of Taliban militants attacked a security checkpoint in Nahr-e-Sufi area early this morning and police returned fire, forcing the militants to flee after leaving four bodies behind,” Safi told Xinhua.

Two policemen were also killed in the firefight which lasted for a while, the official added.

Death toll from Kabul University attack rises to at least 35 as anger grows

KABUL (Reuters) - The death toll from an attack on Kabul University has risen to at least 35, two government sources said on Tuesday, as students protested over the attack and the country marked a day of mourning.

Gunmen barged into the university on Monday, in what was the second attack on an educational institution in the capital in just over a week. Both have been claimed by Islamic State.

Three policemen killed in bomb attack in W. Afghanistan

HERAT, Afghanistan, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Three police officers manning a checkpoint were killed and two people were wounded in a bomb attack hitting the checkpoint in Herat city, capital of Afghanistan's western Herat province on Sunday, local police confirmed.

"The incident occurred in Payyan Ab security checkpoint in Police District 10 roughly at 6:00 a.m. local time. One police officer and a passer-by civilian were wounded and were transported to a regional hospital from the scene," provincial police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada told Xinhua.

KABUL, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The persistent militancy and violent incidents in Afghanistan amid ongoing peace talks have undermined the hope of many locals for lasting peace in the war-torn country.

16 killed, 90 wounded in W. Afghanistan's explosion: official

FIROZ KOAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed and 90 others wounded after a powerful explosion rocked outside a provincial police office in Firoz Koah, capital of Afghanistan's western Ghor province on Sunday, a local official confirmed.

"The final number of casualties would be shared with media later in the day. The number of casualties may change as the rescue of victims from under debris is continuing," Abdul Latif Rahimi from the provincial health directorate told Xinhua.

Many wounded remained in critical condition, he said.

Afghanistan: 3 policemen killed as roadside bomb strikes police van

CHARIKAR (Afghanistan), Oct 17 (NNN-Xinhua) — Three policemen including a senior officer were killed and another was injured as a roadside bomb struck a police vehicle in east Afghanistan’s Parwan province on Saturday, provincial government spokesperson Wahida Shahkar said.

“The deadly roadside bombing took place in the morning rush hour in Salang district and as a result three police personnel including deputy to district police chief were killed and another one injured,” Shahkar told Xinhua.

Nine killed after two army helicopters collide in Afghanistan – Ministry

KABUL, Oct 14 (NNN-BERNAMA-XINHUA) — Nine people were killed after two Afghan army helicopters collided in midair in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province Tuesday night, reported Xinhua news agency.

According to the country’s Defence Ministry,  in a statement on Wednesday, the accident occurred in Nawa-i-Barakzayi district when two Afghan National Army military Mi-17 helicopters crashed due to technical issues while they were taking off.

Over 1,000 Afghan youth commissioned to army after training

KABUL, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,227 youth were commissioned to the Afghanistan National Army on Saturday after completing a three-month military training.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Payenda Mohammad Nazim, director of education with the Defense Ministry, said the newly graduated soldiers would be deployed to serve the nation.

Afghanistan has been facing a protracted war over the past more than four decades that has claimed countless lives including military personnel, militants and civilians.
