Taliban attack on Afghanistan's northern district repulsed, 5 killed

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants' attack on a military base in Khanabad district of the northern Kunduz province was repulsed with five killed, an army officer in the province said Tuesday.

A group of militants, according to the officer Abdul Razeq, launched an attack on an army base at the district at 07:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, triggering a heavy fighting with the militants fleeing away after leaving five bodies behind.

Two more militants and two soldiers were injured in the fighting, he said.

Last week in Khanabad district, Taliban militants in an offensive on Afghanistan's security forces killed 16 pro-government militiamen, according to officials.
