Palestinians warn that only power station in Gaza will stop operating within 72 hours

13 May 2023; MEMO: On Friday, a Palestinian government official in Gaza warned that the only power plant would stop working within 72 hours, as fuel quantities are running out, given the continued closure of the Karam Abu Salem crossing (south)

This came during a press conference held by the head of the government media office (run by Hamas), Salama Maarouf, at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City.

US stands by Israel amid escalations, insists official

12 May 2023; MEMO: The United States stands by Israel's right to defend itself, the American ambassador to Israel, Tom Nides, announced yesterday.

"Concerned about the continuing rocket launches today," Nides said on Twitter, referring to recent rockets that were fired from the besieged Gaza Strip.

The US envoy added that his country was working to achieve a "quick de-escalation."

Egypt starts mediation effort to end Israel's Gaza strikes

10 May 2023; MEMO: Egypt began mediating an end to two days of cross-border fighting in Gaza on Wednesday that saw Israel's air force hit Islamic Jihad targets and Palestinian factions in the enclave launch salvoes of rockets across the border as far as Tel Aviv, Reuters reports.

The second round of cross-border fire in a week came after Israel launched strikes, on Tuesday, against three Islamic Jihad commanders it said had planned attacks against Israelis, following months of escalating violence.

Israel bombs residential building, kills 4 more people in Gaza

11 May 2023; MEMO: Four more Palestinians were killed and seven others were wounded as Israel's air strikes against the besieged Gaza Strip continued for the third consecutive night, Palestinian medical sources confirmed on Thursday morning.

The latest attack was on a six-storey residential building in the city of Khan Younis, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

UN's Wennesland: Israeli killing of civilians in Gaza 'unacceptable'

9 May 2023; MEMO: UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, said on Tuesday that Israeli occupation killing of civilians in Gaza "is unacceptable."

In a statement, a copy of which was sent to MEMO, he said: "I condemn the deaths of civilians in the Israeli airstrikes. This is unacceptable."

He added: "I am deeply alarmed by developments in Gaza after Israel launched a military operation this morning targeting members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement (PIJ)."

OIC condemns Israel airstrikes on Gaza killing 13 Palestinians

9 May 2023; MEMO: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), on Tuesday, strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip, Anadolu News Agency reports.

At least 13 Palestinians were killed and 20 others injured in Israeli air raids on the coastal territory early Tuesday, according to the Health Ministry. The fatalities included four children and four women.

Israel: Netanyahu informed US officials about planned attack on Gaza

9 May 2023; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, informed American officials who visited Israel that he was planning to attack Gaza Strip, Israeli media revealed on Tuesday.

This happened, according to Kan public broadcaster, during a meeting with two senior Biden administration officials that took place one day before the attack.

Israeli minister threatens to assassinate senior Hamas leaders in Gaza Strip

10 May 2023; MEMO: Israel's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Israel Katz, threatened yesterday to assassinate the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, and other senior officials if the movement joins any response by Islamic Jihad to the assassination of three of its leaders, Anadolu has reported.
