Israel restricts UNRWA coronavirus efforts in Jerusalem refugee camps

16 April 2020; MEMO: Spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) Sami Mshasha said the Israeli occupation authorities are impeding UNRWA’s efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the occupied city of Jerusalem and its refugee camps, the organisation’s spokesperson has said.

India: SC considers Centre's stand on helping poor during lockdown

New Delhi, Apr 15 (PTI) The Supreme Court took note of the Centre's submission on Wednesday that it was taking steps to implement relief measures to help the poor during the nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and disposed of a PIL seeking relief such as financial help and food for them.

A bench headed by Justice N V Ramana recorded the statement of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who explained the steps taken by the centre to address the concerns raised in the petition.

UN envoy asks Israel to release Palestinian tax revenues to combat Covid-19

15 April 2020; MEMO: The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov has asked Israel to release the Palestinian tax revenue that it is withholding to allow the Palestinian Authority to combat the social and economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Syria: 110,000 Idlib residents returned homes since Turkey-Russia ceasefire

14 April 2020; MEMO: About 110,000 displaced Syrians have returned to their homes in Idlib, northern Syria, after Turkey and Russia reached a ceasefire agreement in March.

More than a million civilians were displaced from Idlib Governorate due to the military operation launched by the Syrian regime and its allies in the province in November 2019.

Some of the displaced went to camps near the Syrian-Turkish border, while others headed to opposition-held towns in northern Syria.

India: Dalit scholar and activist Teltumbde sent in NIA custody

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) A special court here on Tuesday remanded Dalit scholar and activist Anand Teltumbde in the custody of the National Investigation Agency till April 18 in Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case.

Teltumbde was arrested by the NIA earlier in the day after he surrendered before it following the Supreme Court's directives.

NEW YORK, Apr 14 (APP): The outbreak of coronavirus in India has setoff a series of attacks against Muslims across the country, with the health ministry of the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that Muslims are spreading the virus, according to a leading U.S. newspaper.

“Young Muslim men who were passing out food to the poor were assaulted with cricket bats,” The New York Times said in a New Delhi-datelined report.

Palestine Calls For Int’l Pressure To Halt Israeli Annexation Of West Bank

RAMALLAH, Apr 13 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine said, it is in contact with world powers to prevent Israel from advancing its plan to annex parts of the West Bank, according to a senior Palestinian official.

“The ongoing contact is aimed at pressuring Israel not to take such a step,” said Fatah party’s Vice President, Mahmoud al-Aloul.

Al-Aloul told reporters that, Israel’s attempt to annex parts of the occupied territory, “in coordination with the U.S. administration, is the peak of racism and opportunism,” in light of the world’s occupation with the COVID-19 pandemic.

UN condemns water shutoff to Libyan capital

12 April 2020; MEMO: The United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Libya on Friday condemned the cutting off of water supply to the capital Tripoli over the past week as “particularly reprehensible” and said it must stop immediately, reported Reuters.

An armed group on Monday stormed a control station at Shwerif, stopping water from being pumped and threatening workers, the Great Man Made River Project, which supplies water to much of Libya, said in a statement.

Turkey: 20 Saudis charged in Jamal Khashoggi murder

12 April 2020; MEMO: A Turkish court on Saturday accepted an indictment on the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, reports Anadolu Agency.

The 117-page indictment prepared by Istanbul prosecutors accusing 20 Saudi nationals of involvement in the gruesome premeditated murder was accepted by Istanbul’s Heavy Penal Court No. 11.

India: Kerala MP moves SC, seeks evacuation of Indian citizens stranded in gulf countries

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) A Congress MP from Kerala has approached the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to establish a specialised team to identify Indian citizens who are stranded in Gulf countries and require immediate evacuation amid the coronavirus pandemic.
