Taliban co-founder Baradar to lead new Afghanistan govt - sources

Sept 3 (Reuters) - Taliban co-founder Mullah Baradar will lead a new Afghan government set to be announced shortly, sources in the Islamist group said on Friday, as its fighters battled forces loyal to the vanquished republic in the Panjshir Valley north of Kabul.

The new government's most immediate priority, however, should be to stave off the collapse of an economy grappling with drought and the ravages of a conflict that killed an estimated 240,000 Afghans.

Kashmir still under lockdown after anti-India leader’s death

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Indian authorities enforced a security lockdown and a near-total communications blackout for a second straight day in disputed Kashmir on Friday after the death of Syed Ali Geelani, a top resistance leader who became the emblem of the region’s defiance against New Delhi.

Geelani’s death at age 91 on late Wednesday and the ensuing crackdown on public movement and communications by Indian authorities highlighted the turmoil seething just below the surface in the Himalayan region of achingly stunning beauty.

Pakistan's COVID-19 death toll crosses 26,000

Islamabad, Sep 3 (PTI) Pakistan's coronavirus death toll crossed the grim figure of 26,000 on Friday, even as the country reported 3,787 new cases during the last 24 hours.

So far the country has recorded 1,171,578 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 26,035 total deaths since the first patient was diagnosed on February 26, 2020, the Ministry of National Health Services reported.

India: 5-year-old boy stoned to death by uncle in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Sep 2 (PTI) A 5-year-old boy was allegedly stoned to death by his uncle after the boy caught him stealing money in Bhora Kalan village here, police said on Thursday.

A case was registered in this regard following a complaint by the boy's father, they said.

The accused Anuj Kumar has been arrested, Circle Officer Sharad Chand Sharma said.

According to police, the victim, Sandesh, saw his uncle stealing the money belonging to his father. Kumar later took away the boy and stoned him to death.

India: Owaisi to visit UP for three days next week

Hyderabad, Sep 2 (PTI) Gearing up for the UP assembly elections next year, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday announced a three-day visit to the state next week which begins from Faizabad district.

He said he would visit Faizabad district on September 7, Sultanpur on September 8 and Barabanki on September 9.

Senior officials of India, US review ties

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) Senior officials of India and the US took stock of progress in bilateral cooperation in areas of defence, public health and economy, besides reviewing preparations for the next edition of 2+2 ministerial dialogue.

The officials held the deliberations under the framework of 2+2 inter-sessional meeting in Washington DC on Wednesday.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two sides exchanged assessments about recent developments in South Asia, the Indo-Pacific region and the Western Indian Ocean.

Canadian city to commemorate Sept 5 as Gauri Lankesh Day

Bengaluru, Sep 2 (PTI) The Canadian city of Burnaby has declared September 5 as 'Gauri Lankesh Day',as a tribute to the slain journalist on her death anniversary, her sister Kavitha Lankesh said on Thursday.

"I have received a proclamation (from Burnaby about observing Gauri Lankesh Day)," Kavitha told PTI.
