Prominent Chinese photographer taken by police, wife says

BEIJING (AP) — Lu Guang’s photos exposed the everyday realities of people on the margins of Chinese society: coal miners, drug addicts, HIV patients.

Now, the award-winning photographer is at the center of his own stark story. He was taken away by state security agents three weeks ago for unknown reasons, Lu’s wife, Xu Xiaoli, told The Associated Press late Tuesday.

First gene-edited babies claimed in China

HONG KONG (AP) — A Chinese researcher claims that he helped make the world’s first genetically edited babies — twin girls born this month whose DNA he said he altered with a powerful new tool capable of rewriting the very blueprint of life.

If true, it would be a profound leap of science and ethics.

A U.S. scientist said he took part in the work in China, but this kind of gene editing is banned in the United States because the DNA changes can pass to future generations and it risks harming other genes.

China, India reach important consensus on boundary issues: FM

CHENGDU, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials of China and India had reached some important consensus on boundary issues during a Saturday meeting, said a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The 21st round of talks between Chinese and Indian special representatives on boundary issues was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

China supports necessary WTO reforms

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China supports necessary reforms of the World Trade Organization (WTO), raising three fundamental principles and five proposals concerning such improvements, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said Friday.

The multilateral trading system is now challenged by unilateralism and trade protectionism, Wang Shouwen, vice minister of commerce, told a press conference.

US Section 301 investigation update "groundless, unacceptable": China

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The new accusations against China made by the United States in the update of the Section 301 investigation disregard the facts and are totally unacceptable, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Thursday.

"China is deeply concerned with the new accusations, and urges the U.S. side to stop making statements or moves that are destructive to bilateral economic and trade ties," MOC spokesperson Gao Feng said at a press conference.

China expands ban on waste imports

19 Nov 2018; AFP: China will expand its ban on imports of solid waste, local media reported Monday, almost a year after its first curbs caused havoc in countries that sent their rubbish to the Asian giant.

The regulatory action -- which expands the prohibition to 32 categories of solid waste from the 24 banned last year -- will go into effect from December 31, according to official news agency Xinhua, citing four Chinese government agencies.

India, China officials hold defence, security dialogue

Beijing, Nov 15 (PTI) Top officials of India and China held the ninth Annual Defence and Security Dialogue here after a one-year gap due to the Doklam standoff, as both countries agreed to enhance military exchanges and interactions.

The dialogue on November 13 was held between the two defence delegations headed by Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra and China's Deputy Chief of Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission.

Alibaba Singles' Day sales hit 31 bln USD

SHANGHAI, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's e-commerce giant Alibaba Monday said the Singles' Day sales on its online shopping platforms reached a record 213.5 billion yuan (30.7 billion U.S. dollars).

The total sales on its platforms including Tmall and Taobao on Sunday represented an annual increase of about 27 percent from 168.2 billion yuan a year ago, Alibaba said.

Alibaba launched the annual online shopping promotion on Nov. 11, 2009, a day celebrated by many Chinese young people as Singles' Day.

SHANGHAI (AP) — Online shoppers spent more than $14 billion within the first two hours of China’s annual buying frenzy on Sunday, once again breaking records as the consumer tradition enters its 10th year.

The spending binge breaks from gloomy forecasts about the world’s second-largest economy, which is struggling with a tariff war with the U.S., a stock market slump and slowing overall growth.

Chinese vice premier meets Bill Gates

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng met with Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and chairman of TerraPower, in Beijing on Thursday.

During their meeting, Han told Gates that China stands ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with the U.S. on new energy and energy-related technological innovation to continuously optimize its energy structure.
