India: Schools reopen in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Feb 24 (PTI) Donning uniforms after nearly seven months, thousands of students on Monday turned up at their schools that re-opened across the Kashmir Valley after remaining shut since August last due to the situation following abrogation of Article 370 and winter vacation.

All security arrangements were put in place for the students to attend schools, officials said.

India: NRC will not be implemented in Bihar: Nitish

Patna, Feb 23 (PTI) Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reiterated on Sunday that the National Register for Citizens would not be implemented in Bihar and only the National Population Register would be updated the way it was done in 2010.

The Janata Dal (United) president had in December already made its stand clear that the NRC would not be implemented in the state, though the party supported the Centre's Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

India: 17-yr-old girl gang-raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Feb 24 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in a house in the Sikheda police station area here, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday, following which a case was registered against the three accused and one of them arrested, they said.

India: SP, Congress members stage walkout from UP Assembly

Lucknow, Feb 24 (PTI) Samajwadi Party and Congress members staged a walkout from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday over the issue of baton charge on women protestors in Aligarh.

Soon after the House met at 11 am, Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chowdhury of the Samajwadi Party raised the issue and alleged that women were lathi-charged and tear gas shells were fired during anti-CAA protests in Aligarh on Sunday.

India: Trainer aircraft crashes, pilot dies

Patiala, Feb 24 (PTI) A microlight aircraft crashed here on Monday in the Army cantonment area, killing an Indian Air Force pilot and injuring an NCC cadet.

A Pipistrel Virus SW 80 trainer aircraft crashed soon after taking off from the Patiala Aviation Club airport, killing Wing Commander G S Cheema, an official spokesperson said.

India: Sunni Board to build mosque, hospital on five-acre site

Lucknow, Feb 24 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board on Monday said it will build a mosque as well as an Indo-Islamic research centre, a hospital and a library on the five-acre plot allotted to it following the Supreme Court's Ayodhya verdict.

The decision to accept the land was taken at a board meeting here.

U.S. president arrives in India for two-day visit

NEW DELHI, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in India's western state of Gujarat on Monday for a two-day state visit to the country.

Accompanied by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, the U.S. president arrived in the state's Ahmedabad city to a grand welcome.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed them at the Ahmedabad airport. Gujarat is also Modi's home state.

India: February's air maintains its coolness

KANPUR: Cold weather prevails as clouds pervade up above the blue sky. Monday's minimum temperature remains at 14 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts mark the reasons behind cold weather to yesterday's snowfall and rains in hilly regions of the state of Uttarakhand.

On account of clouds there persists weak Sun rays thereby halting let up in chilly conditions.

Predictably, the weather is going to change after the month's end, said the met department in its regular , daily forecast.
