India: MSRTC buses ferry 73,000 migrants in five days

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) The buses of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) ferried nearly 73,000 migrant labourers in the last five days, it said on Wednesday.

It operated 1,200 buses on Wednesday and ferried 27,528 migrants, most of whom were on the way to the Maharashtra's borders, heading for northern states.

The MSRTC is offering them free bus ride upto the state borders.

Transport Minister Anil Parab appealed that migrant labourers should travel by MSRTC buses, avoiding risky modes of travel.

India: Bus runs over six migrant workers in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, May 14 (PTI) Six migrant workers, who were walking to their homes in Bihar from Punjab, were killed and five others seriously injured when a speeding bus ran over them on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, officials said on Thursday.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday between Ghalauli check-post and Rohana Toll Plaza, about 20 km from here, Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav said.

The bus driver has been arrested, the SSP said.

India: Teacher held for raping teen daughter

Morena (MP), May 14 (PTI) A 55-year-old teacher was arrested for allegedly raping his 18-year-old daughter in Porsa town of Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, police said on Thursday.

The police arrested the accused teacher and his 53- year-old wife on Tuesday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, sub-divisional officer police (SDOP) Avnish Bansal.

The complainant has alleged that her father had raped her on two occasions with the help of her mother and the couple had locked her up at home to prevent her from lodging a complaint, he said.

India: Liquor theft case: Ex Haryana MLA arrested

Chandigarh, May 14 (PTI) Former Haryana MLA Satvinder Rana has been arrested by the state police for his alleged role in the theft of liquor from a sealed godown in Samalkha in Panipat district, a senior police official said on Thursday.

Rana, who was a two-time legislator from Rajound constituency in Kaithal district, was arrested on Wednesday night from the MLA hostel here.

India: Cop dies of COVID-19; sixth death in Mumbai police force

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) A 45-year-old police naik, who had tested positive for COVID-19, succumbed to the infection in neighbouring Navi Mumbai on Thursday, an official said.

The deceased policeman was posted at Shivajinagar police station and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last few days, the official said.

So far, six policemen from Mumbai and one each from Pune, Solapur city and Nashik Rural have died of coronavirus, he said, adding that over 1,000 policemen were infected in Maharashtra.

India: 4 lakh migrants ferried out of Gujarat in trains so far

Ahmedabad, May 14 (PTI) More than 300 Shramik Special trains from Gujarat have ferried around 4 lakh migrant workers to their home states amid the lockdown so far, accounting for 40 per cent of transportation of such people in the country, said officials on Thursday.

With this, out of the total 10 lakh migrants sent back to their respective native places through Shramik Special trains across the country so far, as many as four lakh were from Gujarat alone, they said.

India: COVID-19 Cases In Mumbai’s Slum Surpasses 1,000

MUMBAI, May 14 (NNN-PTI) – Asia’s largest slum, located in Mumbai, has crossed 1,000 cases of the COVID-19, as per the update shared by the city civic authority on Wednesday.

With 66 fresh cases reported on Wednesday, the total confirmed cases from the slum, spread over 613 hectares and home to some one million people, stood at 1,028 with 40 deaths so far.

India: Gujarat Cong urges Speaker to declare Dholka seat vacant

Ahmedabad, May 13 (PTI) A day after the Gujarat High Court declared state BJP minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in 2017 as void, opposition Congress on Wednesday urged the Assembly Speaker to declare Dholka seat as vacant.

Chudasama had won from Dholka seat of Ahmedabad district by defeating Congress candidate Ashwin Rathod in 2017.

India: Jet Airways insolvency resolution professional seeks fresh EoI for defunct airline

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) Jet Airways insolvency resolution professional on Wednesday invited fresh expressions of interest (EoI) for the grounded airline.

This is the fourth time that EoI has been invited for Jet Airways, which was shuttered last year.

The last date for submission of bid documents is May 28 and the final list of prospective resolution applicants will be issued on June 10, as per a public document.

The decision for issuing fresh EoI was taken during the committee of creditors (CoC) meeting held recently.
