India COVID-19 death toll rises to 2,549 as total cases reach 78,003

NEW DELHI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- India's federal health ministry Thursday morning said 134 new deaths due to COVID-19 and an additional 3,722 positive cases were reported since Wednesday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 2,549 and total cases to 78,003.

On Wednesday morning the number of COVID-19 cases in the country was 74,281, and the death toll was 2,415, according to information released by the ministry.

According to ministry officials, so far 26,235 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.

India: HC seeks reply on petition alleging poor condition of quarantine centres in Bihar

Patna, May 14 (PTI) The Patna High Court has sought a reply from the Bihar government on a petition alleging poor condition of quarantine centres in the state where migrant workers have been mandated to stay for three weeks upon their return from other parts of the country.

A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjay Karol on Wednesday asked the state's secretary for Disaster Management Department to file an affidavit in response to the petition filed by Rajiv Ranjan Pandey, a resident of Saran district.

India: Maha Cops asked not to collect fine from vehicles carrying migrants

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Maharashtra Highway Police have issued an order asking their personnel not to collect fine from vehicles carrying migrant labourers during the lockdown.

Following complaints that some police personnel were collecting money illegally in the guise of fine from such vehicles, the highway police warned that those found indulging in such acts would be terminated from service.

India: 8 migrant workers killed, nearly 50 hurt in road accident

Guna, May 14 (PTI) Eight migrant workers were killed and nearly 50 others injured when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Guna town in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday morning, police said.

The accident took place between 3 am and 4 am when the victims were on their way to Uttar Pradesh border from Maharashtra, Cantt police station in-charge Madan Mohan Malviya said.

The injured persons were rushed to a nearby district hospital.

India: Migrant workers block highway in Kutch, pelt stones

Gandhidham, May 13 (PTI) Desperate to travel to their home states amidst the coronavirus-induced lockdown, hundreds of migrant workers on Wednesday blocked a main highway passing through Gandhidham town in Gujarat's Kutch district and pelted some vehicles with stones, an official said.

These migrants claimed that though they had finished the necessary registration process but there was no response from the administration about their repatriation.

Flight bringing 123 Indians from Kuwait lands in Indore

Indore (MP), May 13 (PTI) A Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) plane carrying 123 Indians, stranded in Kuwait amid the coronavirus lockdown, landed at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport here on Wednesday night.

Airport Director Aryama Sanyal said the aircraft (flight number 1461) landed here at 7.57 pm.

Health check-up of all the passengers was being carried out and their luggage was being sanitised, she said.

India: Detention of JKPM Leader Shah Faesal extended by 3 months under PSA

Srinagar, May 13 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration has extended detention of former IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal under the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA) by three months, official said on Wednesday.

Faesal, who has been under detention after scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, was booked under the PSA in February this year.
