India: Sholay's 'Soorma Bhopali' Jagdeep dies at 81

Mumbai, Jul 9 (PTI) Veteran actor Jagdeep, whose paan-stained grin and mischievous eyes as Soorma Bhopali in Sholay made him popular across generations, died on Wednesday at his residence. He was 81.

The actor had not been keeping well, producer Mehmood Ali, a family friend, told PTI.

"He passed away at 8.30 pm at his residence in Bandra. He was not keeping well because of age related issues," Ali said.

Jagdeep will be laid to rest at a cemetery in south Mumbai around 11.30 am on Thursday, he added.

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey arrested in MP

Bhopal/Lucknow, Jul 9 (PTI) Gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in connection with the Kanpur ambush in which eight policemen were killed, was arrested from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, an official said.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra confirmed the development. He told reporters that Dubey is in the state police's custody in Ujjain.

"Yes, we have arrested him and he is in our custody," the minister said, without revealing how police nabbed him.

India: Parents pained at posh schools' expensive text books

KANPUR: If on one side there is a demand for a fee waiver, the parents are sore over the prices of some text books prescribed by the posh schools. All of the books are not related to NCERT. This is another distress of the guardians at the time.

Though the online classes have been running for the students, they are not able to get the books highly-priced by the private publications. If we take into an example of one Hindi book of class VII it comes at nearly four hundred rupees while all the prescribed books of the NCERT are not that much expensive.

India: Gujarat minister tests positive for coronavirus

Ahmedabad, Jul 8 (PTI) A Gujarat minister has tested positive for coronavirus, state Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said on Wednesday.

"The minister has been admitted to a hospital in Ahmedabad after he tested positive for coronavirus," Patel, who holds charge of the health department, said ahead of the state cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar.

The BJP MLA from Valsad district is the first state minister to have contracted the viral infection.

India: All inmates can now consult priv lawyers: prisons authority to HC

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) The prisons authority told the Delhi High Court Tuesday that jail inmates in the national capital can now consult their private or legal aid lawyers via video conference.

The facility was earlier available only for consulting legal aid lawyers, but by a circular issued on Monday, July 6, all inmates in all the jails can now use it to even consult their private lawyers, the prisons authority informed a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan.

India: SC grants a month more to Centre for giving permanent commission to women officers in Army

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) The Supreme Court Tuesday granted one more month to the Centre to implement its verdict directing that permanent commission be given to all serving SSC women officers in the Army.

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra said the Centre will have to comply with all the directions in the verdict.

The Centre told the bench that decision making on the issue is at a final stage and only formal orders remain to be issued.

India: Maoist killed by security forces in Odisha's Kandhamal

Phulbani (Odisha), Jul 7 (PTI) A Maoist was gunned down during an exchange of fire with the security forces in a dense forest in Odisha's Kandhamal district, a day after four of them were shot dead in an encounter in the same area, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

The exchange of fire took place when a team, comprising personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF), launched a combing operation in the forest in Tumudibandha area on Monday night, Kandhamal Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh told reporters.

Kashmir: Parks and gardens open to the public from Wednesday

Srinagar, Jul 7 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced that all the parks and gardens in the union territory will be thrown open to the public from Wednesday.

Advisor to the J-K Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Ahmad Khan made the announcement on Tuesday, an official spokesperson said.

Khan, however, stressed that all the people should strictly observe the protocols and medical advice related to the COVID-19 pandemic

India: Guj Congress leader on ventilator; 2 MLAs test positive

Ahmedabad, Jul 7 (PTI) A senior Congress leader from Gujarat battling COVID-19 infection was put on ventilator support on Tuesday, hospital authorities said.

The condition of the 66-year-old leader, who had served as a minister in the erstwhile Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, is stable, they said.

Meanwhile, a BJP MLA from Surat and a Congress MLA from Banaskantha district have tested positive for coronavirus,said health officials from respective districts.
