India: Record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, July 10 (PTI) India saw yet another record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 793,802 on Friday, while the death toll climbed to 21,604 with 475 people succumbing to the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The number of recoveries stands at 4,95,51, while there are 276,685 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed.

India: Hours before terrorist Vikas Dubey's encounter, plea in SC claims possibility of his killing by cops

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) Hours before gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter near Kanpur on Friday, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government and the police to safeguard his life and ensure that he is not killed by the cops.

The plea has also sought registration of an FIR and an apex court monitored probe by the CBI into the encounter of five co-accused, who were alleged to be associated with Dubey in the killing of eight policemen last week.

India: Don't spread false propaganda on govt hospitals in Telangana, Owaisi to critics

Hyderabad, Jul 10 (PTI): Giving a thumbs up to the treatment being given to COVID-19 patients in Telangana government hospitals, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has appealed to the public not to fall prey to "false propaganda" by people with political motives.

He said though there is a right to criticise and seek redress, the "exaggerated" picture was preventing poor people from seeking timely treatment in the government medical facilities.

India: Army personnel killed in ceasefire violation in Rajouri

Jammu, July 10 (PTI) An Army man was killed in a ceasefire violation by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, officials said.

Pakistan troops opened fire and shelled forward posts along the LoC in Nowshera sector in the early hours.

An Army personnel suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries, they added.

Officials said Indian troops guarding the borderline retaliated, resulting in exchanges.

India: Ashram owner arrested for sexually harassing children in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Jul 10 (PTI) The owner of an ashram in Shukertal was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing four children and forcing them and the others to work as labourers, police said on Friday.

Swami Bhakti Bhushan Govind Maharaj was arrested when he was trying to escape from the ashram, they said.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 9 (PTI) In a novel way to protest against Nepal's claim of areas along Indian border, an organization on Thursday came out with an envelope with the copy of a postage stamp, purportedly released by the Himalayan nation in 1954 printed on it, showing that the areas under dispute actually belong to India.

India: 132 inmates of Nagpur jail test positive for coronavirus

Nagpur, July 9 (PTI) 132 inmates tested positive for coronavirus in rapid antigen tests conducted at Nagpur Central Prison here on Thursday, taking the number of virus infections in the jail to 219, a senior official said.

Jail Superintendent Anup Kumre told PTI that these 132prisoners will be shifted to hospitals on Friday.

Of 219 persons, 42 tested positive in swab sample tests and remaining in rapid antigen tests.

The jail houses 1,800 inmates while 265 police personnel are attached to it.

India: Mamata invited to speak at Oxford Union debate next year

Kolkata, Jul 9 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has received an invitation to speak at The Oxford Union Debate next year, party sources said.

This is the second time that the Oxford Union, considered the most prestigious student society in the world, has invited Banerjee to speak at the debate after 2017.

"She has received the invitation on Wednesday. Most likely she will attend it," a senior TMC leader said.

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey's wife, son arrested

Lucknow, Jul 9 (PTI) Hours after the arrest of gangster Vikas Dubey from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, his wife, son and a servant too were apprehended by the Uttar Pradesh STF here on Thursday evening.

Vikas Dubey's wife Richa Dubey was arrested from her Krishna Nagar residence on Thursday evening by a team of the Special Task Force (STF) on charges of harbouring the gangster and conniving with him, police sources said.

The gangster's son and a servant were also arrested, sources said.

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey killed in encounter in UP: Police

Kanpur, Jul 10 (PTI) Gangster Vikas Dubey was shot dead Friday by police, who claim he was trying to flee after the car carrying him from Ujjain overturned on the outskirts of Kanpur.

The SUV met with an accident at Bhaunti in Kanpur district, overturning on an isolated stretch of the road which was slippery after the rains, police claimed.
