India: Seven of top 10 companies lose over Rs 1 lakh cr in one week

New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) Seven of the 10 most valued domestic companies witnessed a combined erosion of Rs 1,07,566.64 crore from their market valuation last week, with Reliance Industries accounting for around half of the losses.

Last week, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex declined 849.74 points or 1.70 per cent.

Only Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Hindustan Unilever Limited and HDFC from the top-10 list saw a rise in their market capitalisation.

India: Free vaccination for all, says Congress manifesto

Puducherry, Mar 28 (PTI) Free COVID-19 vaccination for all; scrapping of NEET and the new education policy; Rs 1,000 as assistance for homemakers; re-opening of mills; and enhanced pension for martyrs' kin are some of the promises made by the Congress party in its poll manifesto.

The manifesto was released here on Sunday by former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily.

The manifesto promised free vaccination against COVID-19 the expenses of which would be borne by the government.

India: 62,714 new Covid cases, daily deaths over 300 for first time this year

New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) India saw 62,714 new coronavirus infections in a day, the highest single day rise so far this year, taking the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 11,971,624, while the daily deaths crossed the 300-mark for the first time in 2021, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.

Registering a steady increase for the 18th day in row, active cases have increased to 486,310 comprising 4.06 per cent of the total infections. The recovery rate has further dropped to 94.58 per cent, the data stated

Serum Institute delays expected launch of Novavax vaccine in India

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The launch in India of a new COVID-19 vaccine developed jointly by the Serum Institute of India and U.S.-based biotech firm Novavax is likely to be delayed to September, the Indian company’s boss said on Saturday.

Adar Poonawalla, the chief executive of Serum, said in January that the vaccine, named Corovax, was expected to be launched by June.

On Saturday Poonawalla said the trials of Corovax had kicked off in India, but did not say why the vaccine launch was delayed.

Indian gov't says no intention of curtailing flight services amid COVID-19 spike

NEW DELHI, March 27 (Xinhua) -- India's federal civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri Saturday said the government is not planning to curtail flight services amid the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Puri, however, said plans of making all services functional from April 1 have been postponed.

India: SC directs Punjab govt to hand over custody of Mukhtar Ansari to UP police

New Delhi, Mar 26 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday directed the Punjab government to hand over the custody of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who is lodged in Rupnagar jail there, to Uttar Pradesh Police.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R S Reddy said that the custody of Ansari, an MLA from Mau constituency, be handed over to the state of Uttar Pradesh within two weeks.
