India: Adityanath meets Amit Shah; likely to call on Modi

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday met senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah here, and is also likely to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit, sources said.

Adityanath's visit to the national capital to meet the BJP top brass, including its president J P Nadda, comes close on the heels of the party holding a series of review meetings in Lucknow, which had fuelled speculation of a ministerial reshuffle in the state.

Indian state sharply raises COVID-19 death toll prompting call for wide review

(Reuters) --- An Indian state has raised its COVID-19 death toll sharply higher after the discovery of thousands of unreported cases, lending weight to suspicion that India’s overall death tally is significantly more than the official figure.

Indian hospitals ran out of beds and life-saving oxygen during a devastating second wave of coronavirus in April and May and people died in parking lots outside hospitals and at their homes.

Many of those deaths were not recorded in COVID-19 tallies, doctors and health experts say.

India: Fake call centre busted in Ambala, 9 booked

Ambala, Jun 9 (PTI) Haryana Police on Wednesday raided an alleged fake call centre being run in a marriage palace building on Ambala-Kaithal Highway near Ambala city and booked nine people in this connection, police said.

Rahul from Gurugram, Kamal (Panchkula), Chintan (Ahmedabad) and six others were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, they said.

India: Woman dies in UP under suspicious circumstances, in-laws suspected

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 9 (PTI) A woman died under suspicious circumstances at her house in Khedi Sarai village here on Wednesday, police said.

According to police, they have lodged a case on the complaint of her parents, who alleged that she was killed by her in-laws.

Puja's parents told police that she had married Manoj Kumar around two years ago and her in-laws were harassing her.

They told police that Puja's in-laws informed them that she died from coronavirus.

India: 10-year-old raped in Haryana

Chandigarh, Jun 9 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a village school in Haryana's Rewari district by a group of boys, who also filmed the act on their mobile phones, police said on Wednesday.

Barring one, all accused are minor, police said.

They said some of the accused filmed the act and circulated the video locally, which reached the victim's father, who lodged a complaint.

Police said the school was closed due to summer holidays and children, including the girl, were playing there when the incident took place on May 24.

India: Asian Games gold-winning boxer Dingko Singh dies of post Covid complecations

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Asian Games gold medal-winning former boxer Dingko Singh, who inspired a generation of Indian pugilists with his swashbuckling ring craft and flamboyant personality, died on Thursday after a long battle with liver cancer.

He was 42 and had been fighting the disease since 2017. He is survived by his wife Babai Ngangom, a son and a daughter.

During his battle with cancer, the former bantamweight (54kg) boxer's health woes were compounded by a bout of jaundice and COVID-19 last year.

17 killed, several injured in India's vehicle collision

NEW DELHI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed and several others injured, some of them critically, after a bus collided with a loader vehicle in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

The accident took place late Tuesday evening at Kisan Nagar in Kanpur Nagar district, about 110 km southwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

India: Rape accused chargesheeted in J-K's Reasi

Jammu, Jun 8 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said it filed a chargesheet against a man for allegedly raping a woman several times on the pretext of marriage in Reasi district.

The chargesheet against S Harjit Singh was filed in a local court in a case registered against him in 2018 under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code, a police spokesman said.

India: Covaxin stock for 45-plus age group almost over: Atishi

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) No Delhi government hospital and vaccination centre would administer Covaxin to people aged 45 years and above from Wednesday as the vaccine stock for the age group got "almost over" on Tuesday, said senior AAP leader and legislator Atishi.

Out of Delhi's total 5.50 lakh vaccine stock on Tuesday available for people above 45 years, 5.44 lakh were Covishield and 8,000 Covaxin, the MLA from Kalkaji said.

India: Two held over doctored' audio clip defaming UP CM

Kanpur (UP), Jun 8 (PTI) Two social media promoters were arrested in connection with a case registered over a doctored audio clip allegedly defaming the Uttar Pradesh chief minister and the state government, police said on Tuesday.

The arrested persons were identified as Ashish Pandey, a resident of 'Dilkusha Mantri Awas' and Himanshu Saini, a resident of Bazar Khala, Lucknow, they said.
