India's Tamil Nadu extends COVID-19 lockdown until June 14

NEW DELHI, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Local government in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu Saturday extended the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown until June 14 with certain relaxations, officials said.

The lockdown period was to end on June 7.

The decision was taken by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Chandigarh, Jun 5 (PTI) Farmers burnt copies of the Centre's three farm laws near residences of BJP leaders and at other places in Punjab on Saturday as they observed 'Sampoorna Kranti Diwas' to mark the day when these legislations were promulgated as ordinances last year.

Farmers carrying black flags raised slogans against the BJP-led central government for not scrapping the legislations which, they said, will "destroy" the farming community.

India: Man gets 18 months in jail for hurling sandals at HC judge in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Jun 4 (PTI) A magisterial court here sentenced a tea vendor from Gujarat's Rajkot district to 18 months in jail for hurling his sandals at a High Court judge in 2012, out of frustration over long pendency of his case.

Chief judicial magistrate V A Dhadhal of Mirzapur rural court on Thursday held Bhavanidas Bavaji guilty as charged under IPC section 353 (assault on a government servant to deter him from discharging his duty).

Kolkata, Jun 4 (PTI) Trinamool Congress leadership is yet to take a call on ghar wapsi (return home) by former TMC leaders who had joined the BJP ahead of the recently concluded assembly elections which the Mamata Banerjee-led party swept.

India: CBI directs staff to wear formal dress on duty

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) New CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal has directed all officials of the agency to be dressed in formals on duty, warning them that casual dressing will not be allowed.

In an order issued by the Deputy Director Administration, it has been made clear that while all male staff should be dressed in trousers, collared shirts and formal shoes with proper shaving, female staffers will wear suits, sarees, formal shirts and trousers.

India: UP BJP leader arrested for helping criminal escape

Kanpur (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) A history-sheeter was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district on Friday along with a former BJP office bearer, who allegedly helped the criminal escape from police custody, officials said.

The criminal, Manoj Singh and BJP's Narain Singh Bhadauria, were arrested on Thursday.

India: Navy's oldest Hydrographic survey vessel decommissioned

Visakhapatnam, June 4 (PTI) INS Sandhayak, the Indian Navy's oldest Hydrographic Survey Vessel, was decommissioned at the naval dockyard here on Friday after serving the nation for 40 years.

The ship was decommissioned at a low key event due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, a navy release said

The National Flag, Naval Ensign and the Decommissioning Pennant were lowered at sunset in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh,Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command,the Chief Guest at the ceremony,it said.

India: Drive-through vaccination camp at south Delhi mall

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) A two-day drive-through vaccination camp for people aged 18 and above was on Friday inaugurated at a plush mall in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj, its organisers said.

The camp, set up in the mall's parking lot, is being run by a leading private facility in partnership with an NGO, they said.

"A temporary drive-through vaccination centre for people aged 18 and above was inaugurated today (Friday). It will run for a total of two days," a spokesperson of Apollo hospital here said, adding that the camp was located in Ambience Mall.
