India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 28,307,832

NEW DELHI, Jun 2 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 28,307,832 today, with 132,788 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, said the federal health ministry.

Besides, as many as 3,207 deaths since yesterday morning took the overall death toll to 335,102.

There are still 1,793,645 active cases in the country, a decrease of 101,875 in the past 24 hours. The number of daily active cases has been on the decline over the past few days, after a continuous surge since mid-Apr.

India: Ujjain BJP MP pays Rs 250 fine for not wearing helmet

Ujjain (MP), Jun 1 (PTI) Ujjain BJP MP Anil Firojiya, accompanied by Madhya Pradesh higher education minister Mohan Yadav, on Tuesday paid a fine of Rs 250 after realising that he was not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle.

Earlier in the day, Yadav and Firojiya visited a local agriculture market on a motorcycle appealing to people to follow COVID-19 protocols during the unlocking of the "corona curfew".

BRICS foreign ministers hold virtual meeting

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday highlighted the key principles guiding the five-nation grouping BRICS and referred to international law and the UN Charter that recognises the sovereign equality of all states, and respects their territorial integrity.

In his address at a virtual ministerial meeting of the BRICS, Jaishankar said desired change can be achieved only by conducting policies in accordance with these principles.

Current vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar is on six months' extension after his term ended in January.

India: Man shoots dead wife over dowry in UP's Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad (UP), Jun 1 (PTI) A 24-year-old woman was shot dead on Tuesday by her husband for not bringing in enough dowry post their marriage in Raj Nagar Extension area here, police said.

Sarika (24), a native of Upawali village of Budhana tehsil in Muzaffarnagar district, got married to Kuldeep alias Mintoo in February last year.

India: Captain of sunken barge P-305 still remains untraced

Mumbai, Jun 1 (PTI) The captain of the sunken barge P-305 still remains untraced, a fortnight after the tragedy that unfolded off the Mumbai coast during cyclone Tauktae, an official said on Tuesday.

Captain Rakesh Ballav of the barge P-305 is missing since his ill-fated boat sank in the Arabian Sea on May 16 when the powerful storm passed over the Mumbai coast, he said.

India: Young woman killed in running train in MP after sexual assault

Sehore (MP), Jun 1 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman was allegedly killed on a moving express train by assailants who slit her throat after an attempt of sexual assault in Sehore in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday night, police said.

The incident took place in Indore-Bilaspur train around 2 km before Sehore railway station and the victim identified as Muskan Hada died before the train arrived at the station, Sehore district's Superintendent of Police S S Chouhan told reporters.

India: Woman raped inside her house in UP's Fatehpur

Fatehpur (UP), Jun 2 (PTI) A woman was allegedly raped by man inside her house in Dhata area here, police said on Wednesday.

According to police, the woman, who is around 30-years-old, was sleeping in the lawn of her home on Monday when one Uday Pratap Singh (32) raped her.

An FIR in this matter was registered on Tuesday by the family members of the woman and the accused was arrested on Wednesday, SHO of Dhata Police Station Sher Singh Rajput said.

India: Union Cabinet approves Model Tenancy Act

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI) The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Model Tenancy Act, a move that will help overhaul the legal framework with respect to rental housing across the country.

In a statement, the government said that it is expected to give a fillip to private participation in rental housing as a business model for addressing the huge housing shortage.

India: Google claims new IT rules not applicable to its search engine

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI) US-based Google LLC has contended that India's new IT rules for digital media are not applicable to its search engine, and urged the Delhi High Court on Wednesday to set aside its single judge order which applied them on the company while dealing with an issue related to removal of offending content from the internet.
