India: Forex reserves cross USD 600 bn mark for first time

Mumbai, Jun 11 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves crossed the USD 600 billion mark for the first time after increasing by USD 6.842 billion in the week ended June 4, RBI data showed on Friday.

The reserves surged to a record USD 605.008 billion in the reporting week, helped by a rise in foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, as per weekly data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

In the previous week ended May 28, 2021, the reserves had swelled by USD 5.271 billion to USD 598.165 billion.

India: No hope left for people from BJP-led UP govt: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Jun 11 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday claimed there is no hope left for the people in Uttar Pradesh as the BJP government is engaged in 'bandar baant', a Hindi word which suggests that the ruling party only looks after its own people.

Yadav also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state of mishandling the Covid crisis, alleging costly treatment of coronavirus, negligence in treatment of black fungus, shortage of life-saving medicines and stalled development works.

India: 8-year-old raped in UP's Kannauj

Kannauj (UP), Jun 11 (PTI) An eight-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by her father's friend, who later left her in a field thinking that she had died, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at a village in the Gursahaiganj area, where the girl was found unconscious, police said.

The girl told police that the accused took her away on the pretext of giving her toffees and some money but raped her and left her in the field thinking that she has died.

India: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar discharged from hospital

Mumbai, Jun 11 (PTI) Legendary actor Dilip Kumar was discharged from a hospital here on Friday, five days after he was hospitalised due to episodes of breathlessness.

The 98-year-old screen icon was admitted to suburban Khar-based Hinduja Hospital, a non-COVID-19 facility, on Sunday.

He was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion -- a build-up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs and underwent a successful pleural aspiration procedure on Wednesday.

India: Minor girl filmed while being molested in UP

Balrampur (UP), Jun 10 (PTI) Five people were arrested here after a video went viral on social media in which they were seen molesting a 16-year-old girl in a cane field, police said on Thursday.

Udayraj, Saurabh Verma, Ram Lagan, Pillu and one other were arrested from a village here on Wednesday for making the video in which the minor girl is semi-nude, they said.

The purported video shows the accused removing the girl's clothes and threatening and abusing her.

India, Australia to expand cyber security cooperation

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) India and Australia on Thursday agreed to broad-base cooperation in the spheres of the digital economy and cyber-enabled critical technologies, noting the need to strengthen the security of critical information infrastructure such as 5G telecom networks.

The two sides discussed a range of issues relating to emerging technologies in the cyber domain at the first meeting of the India-Australia Joint Working Group (JWG) on cyber security cooperation, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

India: Delhi gets 28,900 more Covaxin doses for 18-44 age group

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Delhi received 28,900 more doses of Covaxin on Wednesday for the 18-44 age group and the stock is enough to cover those eligible for the second dose in the next four days, AAP MLA Atishi said on Thursday.

At present, Delhi has more than 50,110 doses of Covaxin in stock for this category, she said.

There are 1.24 lakh doses of Covishield available for this age group and these can last up to eight days, Atishi said.

She said 47,978 doses of vaccine were administered in Delhi on Wednesday.

India: PM Modi to attend outreach sessions of G7 summit

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate virtually in the outreach sessions of the G7 summit on June 12 and 13, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.

This is the second time Modi will participate in a G7 meeting. India was invited by France in its capacity as G7 presidency to the Biarritz summit in 2019 as a 'Goodwill Partner' and he participated in the sessions on 'Climate, Biodiversity and Oceans' and 'Digital Transformation'.

India: Cash, Lord Ram's idol stolen from Mathura temple

Mathura, June 10 (PTI) An idol of Lord Ram and cash worth thousands of rupees were stolen from a temple here, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday night at Holikeshwar Mahadev temple in Holiwali Gali that falls under Kotwali police station, they said.

According to the FIR lodged on the basis of the complaint received from the temple's priest, the burglars also took away some utensils and costumes.

India: Missing BSP leader found dead in MP

Ujjain (MP), Jun 10 (PTI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Ratlam district president Samrath Chouhan (42), who was missing from his home, was found dead under suspicious circumstances near here on Thursday, a police official said.

His body was found in a dried drain near Bhatpachlana village in Ujjain district, which borders Ratlam, he said.

"Chouhan was last seen on Wednesday night and his body was found in a drain after his family members complained that he was missing," Bhatpachlana police station in-charge Sanjay Verma told PTI.
