India: Mayawati demands impartial probe into death of Pratapgarh journalist

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Tuesday demanded a swift, impartial and credible probe into the death of a journalist of a private news channel in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh, who had recently reported on the liquor mafia.

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday registered a case of murder after the 42-year-old Sulabh Srivastava died here in what appeared to be a road accident.

India: Arvind Kejriwal inaugurates Gujarat AAP office

Ahmedabad, Jun 14 (PTI) Aiming to project the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an effective "alternative" to the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Gujarat in the 2022 Assembly elections, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday inaugurated his party's Gujarat state office in Ahmedabad.

The new state headquarters of the AAP is located on Ashram Road. Till now, the AAP was functioning from a rented office located in a commercial complex in the Navrangpura area of the city.

India: Seven held for raping woman, three minor girls

Agartala, June 14 (PTI) Seven men have been arrested for allegedly raping a woman and three minor girls at a rubber plantation in West Tripura district, around 15 km from here, a police officer said on Monday.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Amtali range, Anirban Das, said seven of the eight accused were apprehended on Sunday from Champaknagar in Jirania police station area, after the family members of the minor girls and the woman filed a complaint.

India: Adani group says foreign investors' accounts not frozen

New Delhi, June 14 (PTI) Billionaire Gautam Adani's group on Monday said accounts of three Mauritius-based funds that own the port-to-energy conglomerate's stocks were not frozen and any reports suggesting the contrary were "blatantly erroneous and misleading".

Shares of Adani group companies plunged on Monday after reports that the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) froze the accounts of the three foreign funds that are among the top stakeholders in the firms.

India: Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut moves HC seeking renewal of passport

Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI) Actor Kangana Ranaut moved the Bombay high court on Monday seeking directions to the regional passport authority here to renew her passport.

In her plea filed through advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, Ranaut said the renewal had been denied by the local passport authority in Mumbai on the ground that she had an FIR registered against her by the Bandra police on charges of sedition and for her alleged hateful tweets.

India: HC refuses to give custody of minor husband to major wife

Allahabad, Jun 15 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has refused to give the custody of the minor husband to his wife holding that the marriage was voidable and allowing so would amount to sanctioning cohabitation between a major and a minor.

But as the boy/husband, who is 16 years of age, was not willing to live with his mother, the court also did not give his custody to her either.

India: Suspended BSP MLAs meet Akhilesh, may join SP

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) About five MLAs suspended from the BSP in recent months met Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday, triggering speculation that they may join his party.

"The meeting with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, which lasted for 15-20 minutes, witnessed discussions on the upcoming UP Assembly elections, and it was a nice meeting," Sushma Patel, MLA from Mungra Badshahpur assembly constituency in Jaunpur district told PTI.

India: Vaccination team lacked cotton at RTO camp

Kanpur: What more can be said if one person has to feel painful discomfort after vaccination at a camp held at RTO here on Monday. 

The vaccination needle pierced on the fleshy spot in the upper part of the hand caused the discharge of blood as cotton was not put on the hole.

The compounder who injected the jab did not put cotton to stop blood discharge. That was so because the team did not possess cotton. What was put was a piece of paper on the vaccinated point.

India: Man with 39 wives and ‘world’s largest family’ dies at 76

Mizoram, June 14, 2021, Reuters: A 76-year-old man who had 39 wives and 94 children and was said to be the head of the world’s largest family has died in north east India, the chief minister of his home state said.

Ziona Chana, the head of a local Christian sect that allows polygamy, died on Sunday, Zoramthanga, the chief minister of Mizoram and who goes by one name, said in a tweet.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI) The government should practise in India what it preaches to the world, Congress leader P Chidambaram said on Monday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on democracy and freedom of thought at a G7 meet.

Prime Minister Modi on Sunday said India is a natural ally for the G7 and its partners in defending democracy, freedom of thought and liberty from a host of threats stemming from authoritarianism, terrorism, violent extremism and economic coercion.
