India: Stan Swamy's death in custody can't be jusitified: Raut

Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI) Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said the death of Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case accused Jesuit priest Stan Swamy in custody cannot be justified even if Maoists are "more dangerous than Kashmiri separatists".

In his weekly column Rokhthok in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana', Raut wondered whether India's foundation was so weak that an 84-year-old man could can wage a war against it, and said being critical of an incumbent government doesn't mean being against the country.

India: UP population draft bill: Those with over two kids can't contest local polls, apply for govt jobs

Lucknow, Jul 10 (PTI) According to a draft of the proposed population control bill, anyone violating two-child policy in Uttar Pradesh will be debarred from contesting local bodies elections, from applying for or getting promotion in government jobs, and receiving any kind of government subsidy.

The Uttar Pradesh State Law Commission (UPSLC) states that the provisions are part of the draft titled The Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization and Welfare) Bill, 2021.

India: Voting for 476 block panchayat chief posts underway in UP

Lucknow, Jul 10 (PTI) Voting for 476 posts of block panchayat chiefs began at 11 am in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, the State Election Commission said.

The voting will continue till 3 pm and the counting of votes will start right after that, it said.

A total of 349 candidates for the block panchayat chief posts were elected unopposed on Friday, the last day for the withdrawal of nomination papers.

India: All Rajasthan districts to have medical colleges: Gehlot

Jaipur, Jul 9 (PTI) All Rajasthan districts will have medical colleges and the state government has fulfilled all necessary conditions for it, said Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday.

"It is a matter of pride for us. It is our endeavour that the medical facilities in the state should be even better. For this, medical infrastructure is being strengthened continuously from cities to villages," Gehlot said in a statement.

India: Rajnath Singh speaks to Israeli defence minister

New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday held a telephonic conversation with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Gantz and conveyed that he looks forward to advancing the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In the talks, Singh congratulated Gantz on assuming the charge of deputy prime minister and defence minister in the new Israeli government headed by prime minister Naftali Bennett, according to the defence ministry.

India: 42% of union ministers have criminal cases against them

New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) Of the 78 ministers in the Cabinet, 42 per cent have declared criminal cases against them with four having cases related to attempt to murder, according to a report by poll rights group ADR.

As many as 15 new cabinet ministers and 28 ministers of state were sworn in on Wednesday, taking the strength of the council of ministers to 78.

Of all the ministers analysed, 33 (42 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves, said the Association for Democratic Reforms report citing their poll affidavits.

India: Rahul, Priyanka slam BJP govt in UP over poll violence

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday slammed the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over incidents of alleged violence and misbehaviour with women during the filing of nominations for block panchayat chiefs, with party leader Rahul Gandhi saying that violence has been renamed "masterstroke" in the state.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the BJP had "crossed" all limits to stop the nomination of a woman in the polls.

India: Petrol crosses Rs 100-mark in UP, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) Petrol price on Saturday crossed the Rs 100-per-litre mark in some places in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Nagaland after fuel prices were hiked yet again.

Petrol price was hiked by 35 paise per litre and diesel by 26 paise, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

This took fuel prices across the country to a fresh high.

In Delhi, petrol price rose to Rs 100.91 a litre and diesel to Rs 89.88 per litre.

India: 'Jungle raj' prevailing in UP: Mayawati

Lucknow, Jul 10 (PTI) Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over law and order, saying a jungle raj is prevailing in the state as violence marred the panchayat polls and women faced indecent behaviour.

Mayawati's comments have come as the Opposition has slammed the state government over incidents of violence in the run-up to the polls for the block panchayat chief.
