India: Uttarakhand extends COVID-19 lockdown till July 20

Dehradun, Jul 12 (PTI) The Uttarakhand government on Monday extended the coronavirus lockdown imposed in the state by another week till July 20, and authorised district magistrates to cap the number of tourists visiting popular destinations in their jurisdictions on weekends if necessary.

Indian Navy receives 10th P-8I aircraft from Boeing

New Delhi, July 13 (PTI) The Indian Navy has received the 10th anti-submarine warfare aircraft P-8I from the US-based aerospace company Boeing, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.

The Defence Ministry had first signed a contract for eight P-8I aircraft in 2009. Later, in 2016, it signed a contract for four additional P-8I aircraft.

India: NLFB militant killed in police encounter in Assam

Guwahati, Jul 13 (PTI) A militant of the National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) outfit was killed in a police encounter in Assam's Udalguri district on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, police launched an operation in Dimachang in Mazbat police station area and the outfit's self-styled Udalguri district commander was killed in an encounter, Special Director General of Police G P Singh said.

"Early this morning, one Jayphrush @ N Jwngkhwl...was killed in police operation in Dimachang area of Mazbat police station of Udalguri district," Singh tweeted.

India: Load testing on Metro's elevated track from IIIT to Kalyanpur begins

Kanpur: Kanpur Metro begins load testing capacity of the elevated track on the priority routes especially from IIIT to Kalyanpur here.

When this vital testing has commenced on one route, there will also be conducted load testing upon U-Girder and Steel Spanning at the Rawatpur route.

Giving this information Kumar Keshav, MD, UPMRC said  load testing on the primary section has started.

He further maintained as a test run on the track will be conducted in November all the testing in regard to the strength of the track  will be completed before the test run.

New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI) Actor-activist Deep Sidhu, who is accused of being the key conspirator of the violence that ensued at the Red Fort on Republic Day, appeared before a Delhi court on Monday.

Sidhu and several other accused appeared before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gajender Singh Nagar through video conferencing.

India: Sacking of 11 J-K govt employees arbitrary move: NC

Srinagar, Jul 11 (PTI) The National Conference (NC) on Sunday denounced the dismissal of 11 government employees by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, saying the move was "blind to justice" and "arbitrary" in nature.

The employees, including sons of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin who has been designated a global terrorist by the US, were sacked by the union territory's administration for allegedly working for various terror groups, officials had said on Saturday.

India: Shatrughan Sinha likely to join TMC

Patna/Kolkata, Jul 11 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha is likely to crossover to Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress soon, sources close to him said on Sunday.

Though through a tweet in Hindi with pro-Narendra Modi flavour recently, Sinha had triggered guesswork that he might stage a "Ghar Wapsi" to the BJP, the sources said he is more inclined towards the TMC, which recently humbled the saffron party and Banerjee emerged as a potent rival of Prime Minister Modi in 2024 general election.

India: Farmers hold protest against BJP in Patiala

Chandigarh, Jul 11 (PTI) A group of farmers protesting against the Centre's farm laws on Sunday chased away a local BJP leader and allegedly manhandled him during a protest against the party at Rajpura in Punjab's Patiala district.

The BJP's Punjab unit general secretary, Subhash Sharma, and party workers were later in the evening not allowed to come out of a house as scores of farmers laid siege.

Protesting farmers had gathered outside the venue of the BJP's local leaders and workers' meeting in Rajpura and started raising slogans against them.
