India: SC agrees to examine fresh plea challenging sedition law

New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday agreed to examine a fresh plea by a former army officer challenging the Constitutional validity of the sedition law on the ground that it causes "chilling effect" on speech and is an unreasonable restriction on free expression, a fundamental right.

A bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana, A S Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy directed the petitioner to serve a copy of the plea to the Attorney General K K Venugopal.

India: Kerala CM Vijayan meets PM, wants GST dues cleared

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday urged the central government to set up an AIIMS in the state as well as provide pending GST dues worth over Rs 4,500 crore.

Vijayan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here and discussed various issues related to the state, including rail projects.

India: KU examinees upset at misprints in first-semester law paper

 Kanpur: Not only repetition of questions but a misprint in LL.B. first semester examinations papers have also come to the knowledge of Kanpur University.

According to the news reports, examinees participating in the fourth question paper of first-semester law have complained of a misprint in alternatives of the answers printed in the paper. They were at odds after the distribution of the question paper at the examinations centres here on Wednesday.

India: U'khand govt cancels Kanwar yatra

Dehradun, Jul 13 (PTI) The Uttarakhand government on Tuesday cancelled the Kanwar Yatra in view of the looming threat of a third wave of COVID-19.

"We decided to cancel the yatra, according topmost priority to human life in view of the threat of a possible third wave, the surfacing of the Delta Plus variant of the virus and its impact across the country and abroad," Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said. The decision was taken after a meeting with senior officials and considering all aspects into account including the opinion of medical experts, he said.

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Poll strategist Prashant Kishor met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the latter's residence on Tuesday, creating a fresh buzz in the political circles.

Kishor has recently held talks with NCP chief Sharad Pawar leading to speculation that he was helping build a larger opposition front to take on the BJP in the next cycle of assembly elections and later in the 2024 general elections.

India: Kerala Guv begins day-long fast against dowry

Thiruvananthapuram, July 14 (PTI) Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Wednesday began a day-long fast at Raj Bhavan, his official residence here, to create social awareness against the practice of dowry and end atrocities against women.

It may be for the first time in the history of the southern state that any Governor was fasting for such a social cause.

He is observing the fast in response to a call by various Gandhian organisations to create awareness against the practice of giving and taking dowry as part of marriages.

India: Current Govt weakening country: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of weakening the country and said India has never been so vulnerable.

He cited a media report that claimed that the Chinese military has again crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh at several places and that there has been at least one incident of clash between the two sides.
