India: Assam bans mass gatherings on Eid

Guwahati, Jul 19 (PTI) The Assam government on Monday announced that no public congregation will be allowed in the state on Eid in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta urged the people to celebrate the festival at their homes.

Prayers at mosques will be allowed with a maximum of five persons, he said.

Eid ul-Adha will be celebrated in the state on Wednesday.

India: Landslides kill at least 30 in Mumbai after heavy rains

MUMBAI, July 18 (Reuters) - At least 30 people died in three Mumbai suburbs after several houses collapsed when heavy rain triggered landslides, officials said on Sunday, and forecasts of further downpours could force authorities to relocate people living in danger zones.

Rescuers resorted to using their hands to dig up the ground in an attempt to find survivors, local television showed, as authorities said more people could be trapped inside the debris. Emergency workers carried the injured through narrow lanes on makeshift stretchers.

India: Minor girl raped by man in UP's Mau

Mau (UP) Jul 17 (PTI) A one-and-a-half-year old girl was allegedly raped by a man here, police said on Saturday.

The man took the minor girl away on the pretext of buying her toffees on Friday night. He took her to a secluded spot and allegedly raped her. He later left the girl outside her house and fled, police said, quoting the complaint from the victim's family.

According to the police, a crowd immediately gathered at the spot and the man was also identified. The police reached the spot and later arrested the accused, officials said.

India: Rabindra Narain Singh elected as VHP president

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) Rabindra Narain Singh, an orthopaedic surgeon and a Padma Shri awardee, was elected as the president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Saturday.

Singh, who hails from Bihar, was serving as the vice president of the saffron outfit so far. He had received Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2010 for his contributions to the field of medical science.

India: Kanwar Yatra cancelled in UP after SC intervenes

Lucknow, Jul 17 (PTI) The annual Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh has been cancelled this year, a senior government official said here on Saturday night.

The development came a day after the Supreme Court said it cannot allow the Uttar Pradesh government "to hold 100 per cent physical Kanwar Yatra in view of Covid", stressing that sentiments, including religious, are subservient to the Right to Life.

India: BSP to begin campaign to woo Brahmins ahead of UP polls

Lucknow, Jul 18 (PTI) Ahead of the 2022 UP Assembly elections, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Sunday said the Brahmins will not vote for the BJP and her party will begin a campaign from Ayodhya next week to "awaken" the community.

Speaking to the media here, Mayawati said she is fully assured that the people of the "Brahmin community will not get misled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and vote for the party in the upcoming elections".

India: Sunday afternoon passes out without rain despite forecast

Kanpur: Rain did occur in the morning on Sunday but the forecast of thunderstorms and rains did not bring downpours at least up to 3 p.m. and after the evening.

Though this time the maximum temperature of the day remained at 30 degrees Celsius. The real feel shade was declared at 37°Celsius by the weather office here.

Indeed, the cloud cover was recorded hundred per cent but it did not cool down to drizzle. The people waited with much longing that the rain would lash at to lessen the humid conditions.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 31,064,908

NEW DELHI, Jul 17 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 31,064,908 today, as 38,079 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, across the country, according to the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, 560 deaths were reported yesterday, taking the total death toll to 413,091.

There are still 424,025 active COVID-19 cases in the country, and there was a fall of 6,397 cases during the past 24 hours.

India: Rajnath Singh holds meeting with Pawar, Antony

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday met senior opposition leaders Sharad Pawar and A K Antony here, sources said.

Both Pawar and Antony had been Defence ministers in the past.

NCP supremo Pawar and senior Congress leader Antony were invited by Singh for the meeting at his residence, the sources said.

The meeting assumes significance as it was held just days before the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament on July 19, they said. Singh is the deputy leader of the BJP in the Lok Sabha.
