India: Assam CM calls for secularism in context of Indian civilization

Guwahati, Jun 21 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday asserted the concept of secularism needs to be defined in the context of `Indian civilisation' and accused the media of being partial towards Left-liberals.

Attacking Leftist intellectuals, liberals and the media, Sarma, at a function where RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat launched a book, claimed the country's intellectual society is still dominated by the left-liberals with the media giving them more space while ignoring alternate voices.

India: UP govt to set up rural secretariats in gram panchayats

Lucknow, Jul 21 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday said rural secretariats will be set at all gram panchayats in the state and a computer operator will also be posted there.

A decision in this regard was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, according to a statement issued here.

The process will be completed in six months.

India: Retina surgical unit to be set up at Kanpur medical college

Kanpur: The State Government has given its consent for setting up the retina surgical unit at Hallet Hospital here. It is in the interest of the children's eye treatment.

It is they who had to face the retina related complex operation in the city. A sum of rupees nine crores will be extended for the purchase of advanced appliances used in the operation.

India: BJP is a 'jhooti' party: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow/Unnao, Jul 21 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday described the BJP as a "jhooti" party, claiming that it has made false promises to the people of the state.

He also accused the BJP government of spying on political leaders, journalists and others through Pegasus spyware.

The SP chief was speaking at an event in Unnao.

India: Active COVID-19 cases register increase for second day

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) India saw a single day rise of 41,383 coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 31,257,720, while the active cases registered an increase for the second consecutive day and were recorded at 409,394, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The country's COVID-19 death toll rose to 418,987 with 507 fresh fatalities.

India: Covid claimed lives of 56 Air India employees

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) As many as 56 Air India employees have died due to COVID-19 till July 14, Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh said on Thursday.

"A total of 3,523 employees of Air India Limited have been affected by COVID-19. Out of this, 56 employees succumbed to this pandemic till July 14, 2021," he stated in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.

The minister said the national carrier has taken various measures to safeguard the interests of COVID-affected employees and their families.

India: DRDO test-fires new-generation Akash S-to-A missile

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The DRDO successfully flight-tested the new-generation Akash surface-to-air missile system from an integrated test range off the Odisha coast on Wednesday.

The defence ministry said the missile was test-fired at around 12:45 pm from a land-based platform and that the "flawless performance" of its weapons system was confirmed by the complete flight data.

The new variant of the Akash missile (Akash-NG) can strike targets at a distance of around 60 km and fly at a speed of up to Mach 2.5.

India: Earnings more meaningful than festival for wagers

Kanpur: Bakrid is an occasion for the daily earners to make money as there is a trend among the butchers to go to other cities for earning during the three-day festival. 

Their demand suddenly increases during the festival as every person seeks help from them.

A group of about twenty or more butchers arrived in the city to conduct the act of slaughtering the goats. What they looked for was earning some money by their specialised act.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 31,216,337

NEW DELHI, Jul 21 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 31,216,337 today, as 42,015 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, across the country, the federal health ministry’s latest data showed.

Besides, as many as 3,998 deaths due to the pandemic since yesterday morning, took the total death toll to 418,480.

There are still 407,170 active COVID-19 cases in the country, with a rise of 1,050 cases during the past 24 hours.

India: Delhi riots: Court acquits man accused of rioting, dacoity

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) A court here on Tuesday acquitted a man accused of being a part of an unlawful assembly, dacoity and rioting in last year's northeast Delhi riots case.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat said that there is no identification of the accused and testimonies of witnesses are completely contradictory to each other.

"It is a clear-cut of acquittal," he added.
