India: 'Baba Ka Bulldozer' remains cynosure of all eyes on Ganga Mela in Kanpur

Kanpur: What caught everyone's attention was Baba ka Bulldozer on Ganga Mela held here on Wednesday. Various processions using tractors and camels were taken out on the occasion.

This Mela is celebrated every year after Holi on Anuradha Nakshtra to pay tribute to the freedom fighters.

They were released by the British government after being made captive during the 1857 war of independence.

On the historical background of the Mela, its origin could be traced back to the independence. It is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Indians over the Britishers.

India: Farmers' organisation float new front for MSP law

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) After the agitation to repeal farm laws, a group of farmers on Tuesday floated a new front to press for their demand for a law for guaranteeing minimum support prices for farm produce.

Raju Shetti, a two-term Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra and leader of the Swabhimani Paksha, said a decision to launch the MSP Guarantee Kisan Morcha was taken at a meeting of various farmers' organizations here.

India: Lalu Prasad discharged from AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad, who was brought to AIIMS here on Tuesday, was kept under observation overnight in the emergency department before being discharged at around 3 am, official sources said.

The former Bihar chief minister, 73, was brought to AIIMS here at around 9 pm on Tuesday after being referred by a medical board of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, as his health condition deteriorated there.

India: Petrol, diesel prices hiked for 2nd day in a row

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices on Wednesday were hiked by 80 paise a litre each for the second day in a row since the ending of an over four-and-half month election-related hiatus.

Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 97.01 per litre as against Rs 96.21 previously while the diesel rate has gone up from Rs 87.47 per litre to Rs 88.27, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers.

India: Punjab CM launches anti-corruption helpline number

Chandigarh, Mar 23 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday launched an anti-corruption helpline number that will allow people to upload videos of officials asking for a bribe or indulging in other malpractices.

Mann launched the number -- 9501200200 -- on the martyrdom day of legandary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, and called it "an anti-corruption action line".

Mann, who was sworn-in as chief minister on March 16 at Khatkar Kalan, sought support of people in order to root out corruption within a month.

Indian Parliament approves Rs 1.42 lakh crore budget for J&K

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Parliament on Wednesday approved the Rs 1.42-lakh-crore budget for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for 2022-23, with Rajya Sabha returning the relevant bills to the Lok Sabha.

The Lok Sabha had passed the bills on March 14.

The upper House returned the bills -- The Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation Bill, 2022, and The Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (No.2) Bill, 2022.

India: Labourer dies as roof falls during house demolition in Kanpur

Kanpur: A 36-year-old labourer was killed after the roof of a dilapidated house fell on him. He was carrying out the demolishing work of an old house at Ghasiyari Mandi in Harbansh Mohal area here.

DCP (East) Pramod Kumar said the demolition work of an old dilapidated house was being carried out in Harbansh Mohal's Ghasiyari Mandi.

In an attempt to demolish a wall, the roof fell on the worker, leaving him severely injured.

Other labourers and contractors present at the spot rushed him to Ursala hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

India: Three men intoxicate & molest woman, reportedly held later

Kanpur: A woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men under the pretext of alcohol. According to the available reports, the accused intoxicated her before sexually assaulting the woman in Chakeri's Lal Bungalow area.

When the woman tried to protest, she was thrashed by the men. On hearing the noises, the local people gathered and informed the police about the horrible incident.

Upon reaching the spot the police arrested one of the accused. A search was launched to catch the other culprits.

The victim has been admitted to the hospital for the primary treatment.

India: Man held for murder of lover's husband in Kanpur

Kanpur: A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his lover's husband in the forest area of Nirala Nagar railway ground in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur.

The arrested, identified as Pawan of Naubasta, was having an illicit affair with Kallu's wife Soni for the past few years.

ADCP South, Manish Sonker, said that we initially suspected Soni's four other friends of the murder, but as of now, there is no evidence against them.

Their location did not match with the place from where the body was recovered or the murder took place.

India: Acquiring of Dalit's house in Kanpur; 14 policemen sent to police lines

Kanpur: Mahadev's house was occupied by a person named Umrao in February. According to the news, Mahadev, a resident of Barra, had made a deal with a person named Umrao for Rs 35 lakh to sell his house in year 2014.This case is of Barra police station.

According to the media reports, there was presence of policemen during the occupation.

Umrao had registered a plot worth Rs 10 lakh and Rs 8 lakh in the name of Mahadev.

After this Mahadev got his house registered to Umrao. But Mahadev did not give up the possession due to non-receipt of the remaining amount.
