Bhubaneswar, Jan 11 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said that one of the basic objectives of the 'Mo Sarkar' (my government) initiative is -- every public servant must understand that the citizen is the master.

The public servant is here to serve the citizens and there should be a conviction on this vision, Patnaik said on Friday while announcing that the Housing and Urban Development Department has joined the 'Mo Sarkar' initiative.

India: Gujarat Assembly passes resolution supporting CAA

Gandhinagar, Jan 10 (PTI) The Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Friday passed a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for securing the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The resolution, which was opposed by Congress MLAs, claimed that persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were not offered Indian citizenship by earlier governments because of their "policy of appeasement".

India: CAA comes into effect from Jan 10

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) The Centre on Friday announced that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act will come into force from January 10.

In a gazette notification, the Union home ministry said the act under which non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be given Indian citizenship, will come into force from January 10.

India: Woman model allegedly raped by two, including minor

Hyderabad, Jan 10 (PTI): A 21-year-old model was allegedly raped by two people, including a minor here, police said on Friday.

The woman, in her complaint, said she was raped by the duo in an inebirated state at her rented house on December 28 last year, they said.

In her complaint filed on January 7, she said they also threatened her with dire consequences if she lodged a police complaint and that they had videographed the act.

The woman claimed that one of the accused is the son of the owner of the hostel where she lived earlier, while the other was his friend.

India: Ker CM meets Aishe Ghosh in Delhi

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 11 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday met Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Aishe Ghosh and said the whole country was with them in their protest against the fee hike in the institution and Citizenship Amendment Act.

Vijayan met Ghosh at Kerala House in New Delhi, expressed solidarity with their protest and also gifted her a book, 'Halla Bol: The Death and Life of Safdar Hashmi' by Sudhanva Deshpande.

India: Teen gang-raped in UP's Ballia

Ballia (UP), Jan 11 (PTI) Three youths have been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said on Saturday.

The girl, who was on a visit to her maternal grandparents' house, had gone out to attend to nature's call on Thursday when the accused allegedly raped her, police said.

3,882 foreigners arrested in India in 2018

New Delhi, Jan 11 (PTI) In 2018, over 3,800 foreigners were arrested in the country with West Bengal alone reporting 35 per cent of the total crimes committed by them, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

Altogether, 3,822 foreigners -- 2,859 males and 963 females -- were arrested in 2018 across India, the data stated.

The NCRB recorded 2,128 crimes committed by foreigners in 2018 across the country, while the numbers stood at 2,242 in 2017 and 1,226 in 2016.

India: Modi arrives Kolkata amidst protests against CAA

Kolkata, Jan 11 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the city on Saturday evening on a two-day visit amidst protests against the contentious CAA and "Go back" slogans.

Modi on his arrival was greeted at the NSC Bose International Airport by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, city Mayor and state Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh and other senior BJP leaders.
