India: Two FIRs lodged against BJP's Dilip Ghosh

Kolkata, Jan 14 (PTI) TMC has lodged two police complaints against West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh in Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts for his comments that anti-CAA protesters "were shot like dogs", police and TMC sources said on Tuesday.

Senior TMC leader and state food supplies minister Jyotipriyo Mullick said on Tuesday that party activists have lodged a police complaint against Ghosh for his controversial remark.

"The common people are living in fear. Some are apprehending that Dilip Ghosh might kill them or shoot them.

India: States shun imported onions; Centre fears stock may rot

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Forced to import onions to check spike in prices, the Union Government now fears that the key kitchen staple may rot in godowns as states have shown little interest in buying them despite its offer to bear transportation cost.

Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the Centre is offering onions to states at Rs 55 per kg landed cost and is ready to bear the cost of transporting the commodity.

While the Centre alone can import onions, it depends on states for retailing them to consumers.

India: Anti-CAA rally: Security beefed up in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 14 (PTI) Security has been tightened in the city and suburbs ahead of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest rally planned by Muslim central committees of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts at Adyar-Kannur near here on Wednesday.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements and a roll call of police officers was held at the police grounds here Tuesday.

The roll call parade consisted of three ADGPs, one DGP, 11 SPs, 18 ASPs, 100 DySPs, 300 police inspectors and 500 police sub-inspectors, police sources said.

India: CAA protests: Delhi Police was behaving as if Jama Masjid was Pakistan

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) A court slammed Delhi Police on Tuesday for failing to show any evidence against Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, observing that people are out on the streets because things which should have been said inside Parliament were not said.

Delhi Police was behaving as if Jama Masjid was Pakistan, Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau said, adding that even if it was, one can protest there peacefully.

Pakistan was once part of undivided India, she said.

India: Remove varsity heads with RSS links: Cong leader to Maha CM

Nagpur, Jan 13 (PTI) Congress leader Ashish Deshmukh has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking him to remove heads of various universities who were appointed under the previous BJP-led dispensation for being loyal to the RSS and its Hindutva doctrine.

Deshmukh, a former MLA who was with the BJP before crossing over to the Congress, said such appointees were "poisoning the atmosphere" of these universities.

India: Tharoor apologises for 'power without responsibility' remark on Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday apologised on Twitter after he was criticised for his remark that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wants power without responsibility, something which has been "the prerogative of eunuchs".

On Monday night, Tharoor alleged that Kejriwal is trying to have it both ways by making statements deploring the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) but has not taken any tangible action.

India: UP gov started process to identify refugees: UP minister

Lucknow, Jan 13 (PTI) The state government has started the process to identify refugees for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act, said UP minister Shrikant Sharma here on Monday.

"The notification for the CAA (by the Centre) has been issued and all district magistrates in UP have been asked to collect data," Sharma told PTI.

In his letter to the vice-chancellor of JNU, Bhaduri expressed pain at throttling of dissent by the university administration.

India: Doctor who treated Unnao rape victim's father dies

Unnao (UP), Jan 13 (PTI) A doctor who treated the Unnao rape victim's father when he was thrashed in police custody died on Monday after complaining of uneasiness here, official sources said.

Prashant Upadhyaya, 45, was rushed to the hospital after complaining of uneasiness where he died during treatment, they said.

Upadhyay had treated the victim's father in April 2018 after he was brutally thrashed in police custody, they said.

Berhampur (Odisha), Jan 14 (PTI) A 41-year-old man from Uttarakhand is on a countrywide 'padayatra' to seek a ban on Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and bring back ballot papers in elections.

Onkar Singh Dhillon, a real-estate businessman of Rudrapur in Uttarakhand was in Berhampur on Sunday evening as part of his 'padayatra' to create awareness against EVMs after travelling around 4,500-km on foot. He left this south Odisha city on Monday as he resumed his onward journey.
