Syria-Israel complete prisoner swap, with Russia's help

19 Feb 2021; MEMO: Syria yesterday released an Israeli woman who crossed into the country after Tel Aviv returned two shepherds to Damascus-controlled territory.

The Israeli woman had entered Syria days ago, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seek the help of Russian President Vladimir Putin to guarantee her release.

No details were given as to how or why the lady crossed into Syria.

Syria regime bombs Idlib, breaching de-escalation deal

19 Feb 2021; MEMO: Syrian regime forces yesterday bombed a number of areas in the northwestern province of Idlib, a day after Turkey, Russia and Iran agreed to support calm in the area.

Local sources said regime forces fired heavy artillery and missile shells on the towns of Kansafra, Al-Fateera, Sufuhn, Fulayfel, Al-Ruwayjah, Benin and Al-Bara in Idlib's southern suburbs.

India gifting 2,000 metric tonnes of rice to Syria

New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI) India is gifting 2,000 metric tonnes of rice to Syria following a request from the Arab republic, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.

The first consignment of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice was handed over by Indian ambassador to Syria Hifzur Rahman to Syrian Minister of Local Administration Hussain Makhlouf at Latakia Port on Thursday, the MEA said in a statement.

The MEA said the remaining 1000 metric tonnes of rice is expected to reach Syria on February 18.

Sixty-five teachers in the city of Aleppo that did not abandon their students during hostilities in the region received humanitarian packages from the Russian military, head of the center’s Aleppo department Sergei Shkerin informed reporters.

Russian military police in Syria train to repel attack on Hmeymim base

HMEYMIM /Syria/, February 6. /TASS/: Officers of the Russian military police, doing their service in Syria as part of the Russian forces in the country, practiced repelling a militant attack at the Hmeymim air base and an enemy’s attempt to infiltrate the naval base in Tartus from the sea, Hmeymim Base Commandant Vitaly Alisevich has told reporters.

In his words, units of the military police, created ten years ago, are now fulfilling the widest range of tasks in the Syrian Arab Republic.

"To me, it has been a disappointment," Geir Pedersen, the UN Syria envoy, who was facilitating the five-day talks of the 45-strong Syrian Constitutional Committee, told journalists after the week-long talks ended, leaving the schedule of a new round uncertain.
