Pakistan flooding deaths pass 1,000 in ‘climate catastrophe’

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Deaths from widespread flooding in Pakistan topped 1,000 since mid-June, officials said Sunday, as the country’s climate minister called the deadly monsoon season “a serious climate catastrophe.”

Flash flooding from the heavy rains has washed away villages and crops as soldiers and rescue workers evacuated stranded residents to the safety of relief camps and provided food to thousands of displaced Pakistanis.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 27 (APP): Another proof of the Indian government’s nefarious propaganda to defame Pakistan has come to fore as it is presenting a mentally unsound Pakistani national as a terrorist.

Tabarak Hussain, a resident of Sabzkot village of Kotli in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and mentally unsound, was shot at and arrested in injured condition by Indian troops after he inadvertently crossed the Line of Control in Naushera area of Rajouri district of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir a few days ago.

45 killed, 113 injured in rain spells across Pakistan in 24 hours

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 45 people were killed and 113 others injured in heavy monsoon rain-triggered flash floods and other rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours in Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.

According to a report released by the NDMA Friday evening, the country's southern Sindh province was the worst-hit region with 33 killed and 98 others injured, followed by the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with 10 killed and 13 injured, while the eastern Punjab province reported two deaths.

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- As many as 903 people were killed, nearly 1,300 injured and thousands left homeless as heavy monsoon rains and flash floods continued to play havoc in Pakistan since mid-June, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Wednesday.

More than 70 people died and over 82,000 houses were damaged over the past 24 hours in various rain-related incidents in parts of the country, according to the NDMA statistics.

Pakistani court bars police from arresting ex-premier Khan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A Pakistani court on Thursday extended former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s protection from arrest through the end of the month, officials said, after police filed terrorism charges against the country’s popular opposition leader.

The decision effectively shields Khan from arrest until Sept. 1 over accusations that during a speech last weekend, he had threatened police officers and a female judge — remarks that triggered the terrorism charges.

Floods wreak havoc across Pakistan; 903 dead since mid-June

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Heavy rains have triggered flash floods and wreaked havoc across much of Pakistan since mid-June, leaving 903 dead and about 50,000 people homeless, the country’s disaster agency said Wednesday.

Thousands whose homes were swept away now live in tents, miles away from their inundated villages and towns, after being rescued by soldiers, local disaster workers and volunteers.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (APP): Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi on Monday said Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Qatar would open new vistas of opportunities.

Talking to APP before proceeding to Qatar, Ashrafi who is also the chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council said this visit would further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.
