Aid for flood victims arrives in hard-hit Pakistani province

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Two more U.S. military planes loaded with tons of aid for Pakistanis affected by flooding from deadly monsoon rains landed Sunday in southern Sindh province, one of the worst-affected regions in the impoverished country.

Saif Ullah, spokesman for the country’s Civil Aviation Authority, said each plane was loaded with about 35 tons of relief aid that would be distributed in the province by the World Food Program. The aircraft landed at Sukkur Airport in Sindh and Ullah said the U.S. operation that began Thursday would continue until Sept. 16.

UN chief to take up issue of ‘Debt Swaps’ with IMF, WB for Pakistan

KARACHI, Sep 10 (APP): Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres has said that UN will strongly advocate for ‘debt swaps’, with IMF and World Bank through which developing countries like Pakistan instead of paying a debt to foreign creditors will be able to use that money to invest in climate resilience, investments in sustainable infrastructure, and green transition of their economies.

He said, ‘We will go on strongly advocating for these solutions in the meetings with IMF and World Bank, which will take place soon. And, also in G-20 meeting.’

US extends further $20 mln humanitarian assistance for Pakistan’s flood victims

ISLAMABAD, Sep 9 (APP): US Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power on Friday announced that the United States, through the USAID, extended an additional US$20 million in humanitarian assistance to support the people affected by severe flooding in Pakistan.

Pakistan was ravaged by heavy monsoon rains, as well as landslides and glacial lake outburst floods that have been ongoing since June, the USAID Administrator said.

UN chief calls for massive int'l support for Pakistan to handle climate catastrophe

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres here on Friday appealed to the international community for massive support for Pakistan to respond to the ongoing climate catastrophe devastating the lives of millions.

"Pakistan needs massive international support. It is not just a message of solidarity but an international obligation and responsibility. Pakistan is at the front line of the impact of climate change," the secretary-general said.

Pakistan court to indict ex-PM Khan for contempt of court - lawyer

ISLAMABAD, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A Pakistani court ruled on Thursday that it will indict former Prime Minister Imran Khan on charges of contempt of court, his lawyer and local broadcasters said, which could lead to his disqualification from politics if convicted.

The ruling has stoked more political instability in the South Asian nation of 220 million, which is facing the worst-ever flooding.

Taliban: UAE firm to run flight services on Afghan airports

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Taliban and the Abu Dhabi-based firm GAAC Solutions signed a contract Thursday for the Emirati company to provide flight services and manage planes landing and taking off on key airports in Afghanistan.

The flight guidance services deal will also include equipping the facilities and training Afghan staff at country’s three major airports, including the one in the capital of Kabul, the Taliban said.

19th UAE flight carrying relief goods for flood survivors arrives

ISLAMABAD, Sep 07 (APP): Another flight from the United Arab Emirates carrying relief goods for the flood-stricken people of Pakistan arrived here at Nur Khan Airbase on Wednesday.

So far, 19 flights from the UAE have landed in Pakistan carrying food, medical supplies and tents etc. 

This is in continuation of the humanitarian air bridge established between Pakistan and the UAE.

“Pakistan is thankful to the Government and people of UAE for showing support and solidarity in these times of grave crisis,” the Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement.

China-donated tents for flood victims installed, utilized in SW Pakistan: official

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tents donated by China for flood victims in Pakistan have been installed in the country's southwestern Balochistan province, a local official told Xinhua Tuesday night.

Some tents were installed a few days ago in Usta Mohammad area in Jaffarabad district of the province, said Faisal Naseem, director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Balochistan.

He said the tents were mostly used by people displaced by floods, and also serving as medical camps and utilized by rescue workers for accommodation.
