India: Karnataka invites Elon Musk to set up Tesla plant

Bengaluru, Jan 18 (PTI) Joining the growing list of Indian states wooing Tesla's billionaire founder and CEO Elon Musk to start a manufacturing unit, Karnataka on Tuesday projected itself as the "Electric Vehicle (EV) hub" of India and an ideal destination to set up a plant.

Several Indian states like Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have already invited Musk to set up shop.

India: Karnataka ULB polls: Congress outperforms the ruling BJP

Bengaluru, Dec 30 (PTI) Opposition Congress has outperformed the ruling BJP in the polls held for 58 urban local bodies (ULBs) spread across 20 districts in Karnataka, for which results were declared on Thursday.

Out of a total 1,184 wards that went for polls from these ULBs on Monday, the Congress won in 501 while the BJP managed to win in 433 and JD(S) in 45, the State Election Commission said.

India: PFI activists take out march against police action

Mangaluru, Dec 17 (PTI) Activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) on Friday staged a march to the office of the Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police here against the lathicharge on protestors outside a police station in Puttur on December 14.

The protestors who took part in the SP office chalo' march also demanded the release of their activists from police custody.

India: Karnataka govt plans bill prohibiting 'Love Jihad'

Belagavi (K'taka) Dec 13 (PTI) Even as the BJP government in Karnataka prepares to table the anti-conversion Bill during the ongoing winter session of legislature, state's Energy Minister V Sunil Kumar on Monday said that a law prohibiting 'love jihad' will also be introduced in the days to come.

'Love jihad' is a term generally used by right wing activists to refer to the alleged campaign of Muslims forcing Hindu girls to convert in the guise of love.

India: 66 medical students test Covid-19 positive in Karnataka

Dharwad (Karn), Nov 25 (PTI) Two hostels of SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital here have been sealed, with 66 medical students studying there having tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on Thursday.

About 300 out of the total 400 students studying in the medical college have undergone COVID tests so far.

According to officials, a students' event almost a week ago might have resulted in the spread, as they advised people to avoid attending programmes like marriage, functions, and cultural gatherings.

India: Activist-poet Varavara Rao issued NBW by Sessions Court

Bengaluru, Oct 23 (PTI): A court in Madhugiri in Tumakuru district, Karnataka, has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against activist and revolutionary poet Varavara Rao. He is out on bail on medical grounds in a different case with a condition not to move out of Mumbai, his lawyer said.

"It's a case pertaining to an attack on policemen in Tumakuru in 2005 in which Varavara Rao and Gaddar (another activist-poet) are among the accused," advocate S Balan told PTI.

India: Nuisance to public: Police raids pub in city

Mangaluru, Oct 24 (PTI): A pub here was raided by the City Crime Branch police on Saturday night following complaints from the public about the nuisance caused by loud music.

Police sources said the people in the neighbourhood complained that a few customers of the pub were behaving in an indecent manner with students walking on the streets.

It was alleged that the pub was open beyond the stipulated hours.

India: Muslim marriage is a contract and not sacrament unlike a Hindu marriage: K'taka HC

Bengaluru, Oct 20 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court has held that the Muslim marriage is a contract with many shades of meaning, not a sacrament unlike a Hindu marriage and does not repel certain rights and obligations arising from its dissolution.

The case pertains to a petition filed by Ezazur Rehman (52) in Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in Bengaluru, praying to quash an order passed by the First Additional Principal Judge of Family Court in Bengaluru on August 12, 2011.

India: 21 died in Karnataka due to rains, since Oct 1

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said 21 people have died due to rains that has ravaged several parts of the state since early this month and officials have been directed to give compensation.

The Chief Minister who also took stock of the power situation in the state said, that the government will ensure there are no power cuts.

India: PM Modi RSS' puppet: Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru, Oct 5 (PTI) JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said the BJP governments at both the Centre and in Karnataka were functioning on the directions of the RSS, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was its "puppet".

"I'm observing the developments in national politics. Whether it is the central government or the government in our state, they are not the governments of elected representatives. These governments are functioning on the directions of the RSS," Kumaraswamy said.0
