India: 'The Kashmir Files' to be tax free in Karnataka: CM

Bengaluru, Mar 13 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday announced making the movie 'The Kashmir Files' tax free in Karnataka.

The film directed by Vivek Agnihotri is based on the killings and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir valley by Islamic extremists.

India: Wish to finish hearing Hijab case this week: K'natka HC

Bengaluru, Feb 22 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said it wishes to dispose of the Hijab related case this week itself and sought the cooperation of all the parties involved.

As soon as the court proceedings began, a lawyer appearing for the petitioner girls requested the full bench of the Karnataka High Court for some relaxation to the Muslim girls who wish to appear in the schools and colleges with Hijab. They had moved the court against the hijab ban.

India: Students in Karnataka stand firm on Hijab

Bengaluru, Feb 19 (PTI) Girl students in many parts of Karnataka were denied entry into their respective educational institutions on Saturday as they arrived in Hijabs, despite a court order, as the issue showed no signs of abating after its flare-up about a fortnight ago that prompted the government to close down colleges and institutions for a couple of days.

Hyderabad, Feb 20 (PTI) A case was registered against BJP leader and party's MLA in Telangana T Raja Singh over his comments for threatening people to vote for his party in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday.

The Election Commission on Saturday censured Raja Singh and barred him from campaigning for 72 hours.

India: Udupi MGM college that triggered hijab row reopens

Mangaluru, Feb 18 (PTI) The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) college in the district headquarters town of Udupi in coastal Karnataka, which witnessed chaotic scenes last week with student groups facing each other shouting slogans against hijabs and saffron shawls, reopened Friday after a 10-day break.

The college reopened as practical examinations are scheduled to be held for pre-university (PU) students. For the PU section, only students appearing for the examination are being allowed entry into the college premises.

India: Hijab row in BJP ruled Karnataka; 60 students return home from Udupi degree college

Mangaluru, Feb 17 (PTI) Around 60 final year students of the government G Shankar memorial women's first grade degree college in Udupi on Thursday returned home after they were told to take off their hijabs by college authorities.

Though the Muslim girl students argued with the authorities saying the chief minister has clarified that uniforms are not mandatory in degree colleges, the authorities said it is the college development committee that fixed the rules.

India: Chaos prevails in Karnataka govt PU colleges as Hijabi students denied entry

Bengaluru, Feb 16 (PTI) Chaos prevailed on Wednesday in several pre-university colleges in Karnataka, which were opened on Wednesday after remaining shut for a week owing to the Hijab row, as the Burqa-clad Muslim students were not let in.

Amid tight security with policemen deployed in and around Pre-university colleges at many sensitive places, the day saw a section of Muslim students remaining adamant not to remove the Burqa, let alone Hijab, the Islamic scarves.

India: Karnataka hijab row: High schools reopen in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 14 (PTI) High schools in Karnataka reopened on Monday after being shut from last Wednesday following untoward incidents in parts of the State over the hijab row.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been imposed in sensitive areas in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, and Bengaluru.
