India: Sangh outfits fomenting trouble: CFI

Mangaluru, Feb 9 (PTI) The hijab issue which first surfaced at a pre-university in Udupi could have been resolved locally and the Sangh Parivar outfits are responsible for spreading it to other districts, Campus Front of India (CFI) Karnataka state president Atauallah Punjalkatte alleged on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters at Udupi, he claimed that the Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat had also encouraged the Sangh outfits even when the High Court was hearing the issue.

India: NCP holds demonstration supporting 'hijab' in Maha

Pune, Feb 10 (PTI) The Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) city unit held a demonstration in Pune on Thursday in support of 'hijab' for female Muslim students, amid a controversy over the issue in neighbouring Karnataka.

A number of girls and women held placards with the message 'hijab is our right, hijab is our pride', as part of the demonstration in Phule Wada area here in Maharashtra.

India: 'Hijab' row hots up in Karnataka, CM appeals for peace

Bengaluru, Feb 7 (PTI) The 'hijab' (scarf) row in Karnataka intensified on Monday with some students seeking to defy the government order mandating uniform style of clothes as Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai issued an appeal to maintain peace.

At a college at Kundapur in Udupi district of the State, the principal talked to girl students wearing hijabs and explained the government order to them. But the students insisted on wearing the headscarves, and were asked to go to a separate room arranged for them.

Bengaluru, Feb 5 (PTI) The 'hijab' row has taken political colour in Karnataka, as the ruling BJP stood strongly in support of uniform related rules followed by educational institutions, calling the headscarf, a religious symbol, while the opposition Congress has come out in support of Muslim girls.

There have been several instances in coastal Karnataka, where Muslim girl students, turning up at colleges in hijab, not being allowed into classes, and Hindu boys responding with saffron shawls as a counter to it.

India: Hijab row spills into streets at Kundapur

Mangaluru, Feb 5 (PTI) The hijab' controversy in Udupi district of Karnataka on Saturday spilled into the streets with a group of students of two junior colleges at Kundapur taking out a procession in the town wearing saffron shawls demanding ban on headscarves on the campuses.

Hindu boy students of Kundapur junior college and R N Shetty college who staged the protest, said they will continue to wear the shawls if Muslim girl students are allowed to wear hijabs.

Mangaluru (Karnataka), Feb 2 (PTI) While the row over wearing 'hijab' (head-scarf) at a government pre-university college in Udupi, 56 kms from here, continues with a student moving court on the issue, another similar controversy erupted at a college 40.8 kms away at Kundapur.

Apparently, a few girl students attended the college wearing the 'hijab' at Kundapur. This prompted 100 boys to wear saffron shawls. This happened on Wednesday.

India: Hijab row: Student moves Karnataka HC

Mangaluru, Feb 1 (PTI) A student of the girl's pre-university college in Udupi district has moved the Karnataka High Court with a prayer to allow the right to wear a hijab' (headscarf) inside the classroom.

The writ petition was filed on behalf of the student Resham Farooq, represented by her brother Mubarak Farooq.

The petitioner states that the students' right to wear a hijab is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 14 and 25 of the Constitution and is an essential practice of Islam.

India: Civil society concerned over rise in hate crimes

Bengaluru, Jan 29 (PTI): Calling journalist Gauri Lankesh a victim of hate crime, members of civil society on Saturday expressed concern over the alleged rise in incidents of such crimes. At a webinar organised by the Gauri Memorial Trust (GMT) and Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) to recall the life and courage of Gauri Lankesh on her 60th birth anniversary, the topic discussed was "Hate as a State Project."

India: Former BJP CM Yediyurappa's granddaughter found hanging

Bengaluru, Jan 28 (PTI): Former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's granddaughter Dr Soundarya V Y was found hanging in her house here on Friday and police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Soundarya, daughter of the BJP leader's second daughter Padmavathi, was married to Dr Neeraj S, who works in the same hospital where she is employed, police said.

The couple had a nine-month-old son, whose christening ceremony had taken place a couple of months ago, according to family sources.

India: Man held with Rs 1.48 crore cash, jewellery

Mangaluru, Jan 24 (PTI) Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel attached to the Mangaluru junction railway station on Sunday detained a man travelling with Rs 1.48 crore in cash and 800 gm of gold ornaments without any valid records on the Mumbai LTT-Ernakulam Duronto express.

The RPF later handed over the man, identified as Mahendra Singh Rao (33), a native of Udaipur in Rajasthan, to the railway police at Mangaluru central, a release from the RPF said here.
