Indian M asks Gujarat to increase COVID-19 testing

Ahmedabad, Aug 11 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday stressed on the need to increase coronavirus testing in Gujarat in view of the "high positivity rate" prevailing in the state.

The PM made the suggestion during his virtual interaction with chief ministers of 10 states, including Gujarat's Vijay Rupani, on the latest COVID-19 situation.

"Testing needs to be ramped up especially in those states where testing rate is low and positivity rate is high.

These states are Bihar, Gujarat, UP, West Bengal and Telangana.

India: Police recover explosives from naxal terrorist's hideout

Gondia, Aug 11 (PTI) Police on Tuesday busted a naxal hideout in Gondia district of Maharashtra and recovered explosives, including an IED and detonators, an officer said.

The hideout was located between Dhanegaon and Murkodoh villages in naxal-infested Salekasa tehsil.

The officer said the IED was planted near Daldalkuhi Spring Point apparently to ambush police personnel.

India: Poet Rahat Indori laid to rest

Indore, Aug 11 (PTI) Celebrated Urdu poet Rahat Indori, who died on Tuesday following a heart attack, was laid to rest in the presence of few relatives and close friends in the city's Choti Khajrani cemetery late in the evening.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Indori's numerous fans were forced to bid adieu to him from their homes.

Only 20 persons were present at the spot, most of them donning Personal Protection Equipment kits.

India: Dead patient's relatives ransack hospital in Navi Mumbai

Thane, Aug 11(PTI) Irate relatives of a patient who died at a hospital in Navi Mumbai ransacked the medical facility and also assaulted its staff on Tuesday, alleging negligence in treatment, police said.

They went on a rampage and smashed the fittings, fixtures and furniture of the hospital in Vashi and also beat up its staff, the police said.

An official at the Vashi police station said an offence of rioting has been registered people involved in the incident.

India: Defeat of 'political perversity' in Rajasthan: Sena

Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Wednesday said failure of 'Operation Lotus' in Rajasthan was the defeat of "political perversity", days after a meeting between Congress leaders Sachin Pilot and Rahul Gandhi signalled an amicable resolution of the Rajasthan political crisis.

An editorial in Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot performed "an operation on 'Operation Lotus' and taught the BJP a lesson".

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey's aide arrested in UP's Chitrakoot

Lucknow, Aug 11 (PTI) An aide of gangster Vikas Dubey has been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police from Chitrakoot district, officials said on Tuesday.

The arrested aide, Bal Govind Dubey alias Lalu, carried a reward of 50,000. He was an associate of key accused of Bikru case gangster Vikas Dubey, an STF spokesman said on Tuesday.

India: Expert committee on COVID-19 vaccine administration to meet on Wednesday

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) An expert committee under the chairmanship of NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul will meet on Wednesday to consider the logistics and ethical aspects of procuring and administering the COVID-19 vaccine, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The committee on vaccine administration will engage with all the stakeholders including state governments and vaccine manufacturers, the ministry said in a tweet.

Air India Express plane crash: condition of eight injured critical

Malappuram, Aug 10 (PTI) The condition of eight, out of the 101 passengers, who were injured in the Air India Express plane crash at Karipur airport here, remains critical, officials said.

A total of 71 have been discharged till now, after being treated at various hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode.
