India: Naxal terrorist killed in Chhattisgarh encounter

Raipur, Aug 10 (PTI) A Naxal was gunned down by security forces on Monday in the forest along the border of Kondagaon-Kanker districts in Chhattisgarh, an official said.

A gunfight took place with the ultras at around 5 pm in the jungles near Sendurmeta village when District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) personnel were out on an operation, Inspector General of Police (Bastar) Sundarraj P told PTI.

The spot of the encounter is some 150 kilometres from the state capital Raipur.

India: Rebel Cong MLA meets Gehlot, says Rajasthan govt safe

Jaipur, Aug 10 (PTI) Rebel Congress MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma here on Monday met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, indicating a patch-up between rival party factions.

After the meeting at Gehlot's official residence, Sharma said the "government was safe" and things will get clear by Tuesday. He said other rebel MLAs should also return to Jaipur.

India: Man dials emergency, threatens to harm PM Modi, gets arrested

Noida (UP), Aug 10 (PTI) Noida police on Monday arrested a 33-year-old man after he called up the emergency number '100' and threatened to harm Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said.

The accused has been identified as Harbhajan Singh, who lives in Sector 66 and hails from Haryana, they said, adding the man appears to be a drug addict .

India: Six Congress MLAs in Manipur resign

Imphal, Aug 11 (PTI) Six Congress MLAs in Manipur have submitted their resignation to the speaker, party legislator O Henry Singh said on Tuesday.

They are among the eight Congress MLAs who defied a party whip on Monday and skipped the one-day session of the assembly, in which the BJP-led N Biren Singh government won a facile vote of confidence.

India: Second attempt to cap OIL gas well fails

Guwahati, Aug 10 (PTI) The second attempt to shut Oil India's damaged well at Baghjan in Assam, which has been spewing gas uncontrollably for 76 days, failed on Monday when the iron cable to lift the lid snapped, the PSU said.

This was the second attempt in ten days.

The company said in a statement that when the blow out preventer (BOP) stack alignment was underway to insert the studs one of the two bull lines connected with the Athey Wagon, the equipment for fighting oil field fire which was lifting it, came out from the socket due to excessive heat.

India: Further hearing needed in 2009 contempt case against Bhushan, Tejpal : SC

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday said further hearing was required in the 2009 criminal contempt case against activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan and journalist Tarun Tejpal to examine whether comments on corruption against judges per se amounted to contempt or not.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra and comprising justices B R Gavai and Krishna Murari posted the matter for hearing on August 17.

India: 56 prison inmates test positive for coronavirus in UP's Bareilly

Bareilly (UP), Aug 10 (PTI) At least 56 inmates of two prisons in Bareilly of Uttar Pradesh have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said.

"Reports of 51 inmates of central jail and five inmates of district jail have been found positive for COVID-19" District Surveillance Officer, Ashok Kumar said.

India: EIA draft must be withdrawn to stop 'environmental destruction': Rahul

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday stepped up his attack on the Centre over the draft environment impact assessment (EIA), saying it must be withdrawn to stop "environmental destruction".

Gandhi alleged that the aim of EIA 2020 draft was clear -- "loot of the nation".
