India: Man arrested for raping minor after fraudulently `marrying' her

Mandsaur (MP), Dec 3 (PTI) A man was arrested in Mandsaur town of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl after fraudulently marrying her, the police said.

Sonu Kumawat (24), the accused, and the girl knew each other for some time, a police official said.

India: Onions worth Rs 30k stolen in MP

Mandsaur (MP), Dec 3 (PTI) A farmer has alleged that thieves harvested and carted away seven quintals of onions worth over Rs 30,000 from his field in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

Onions, now the staple of political debates besides the kitchen due to its skyrocketing prices, are retailing at Rs 100-120 per kilogram across the country.

India: Jailed Lalu re-elected RJD chief

Patna, Dec 3 (PTI) Incarcerated Lalu Prasad was on Tuesday re-elected as the national president of his Rashtriya Janata Dal for the 11th consecutive term.

Prasad, who had founded the party in 1997, is at Ranchi serving sentences in fodder scam cases and his nomination papers were submitted at the RJD state headquarters by his sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav.

India: Union cabinet clears Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) The Union Cabinet has cleared the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution there, sources said on Wednesday.

A bill to amend the the Citizenship Act, 1955, is likely to be introduced in the Parliament in the next two days, the sources said.

India: Total FDI inflow into India increased in 2018-19: govt

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) The FDI inflow into India has increased in the last fiscal in comparison to previous years with USD 62 billion foreign investments in 2018-19, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Goyal's response came in response to a question by Congress MP Abdul Khaleque on whether the Foreign Direct Investments into India have declined in 2018-19 as compared to the previous years.

India: J-K faces power shortage of 408 MW

Jammu, Dec 4 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a shortfall of 408 megawatts (MW) of power supply during the thick of winter, officials said on Wednesday.

The union territory is getting only 1,959 MW electricity against a demand of 2,367 MW, Commissioner-Secretary of Power Development Department Hirdesh Kumar said.

Against the average yearly restricted demand of 938 MW in Jammu region, the department provided 819 MW electricity, resulting in a shortfall of 120 MW, he said.

India: SC grants bail to Chidambaram in INX Media money laundering case

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Congress leader P Chidambaram in a money laundering case related to INX Media and directed that he could not leave the country without its prior permission nor speak to the media.

Chidambaram, who has been in custody for 105 days, should neither try to influence witnesses nor tamper with evidence, the court said while setting aside the Delhi High Court November 15 verdict denying the former Union finance minister bail
