India: Maha govt to review bullet train project: Thackeray

Mumbai, Dec 2 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered a review of all on-going development projects in the state, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train.

The bullet train project has faced stiff opposition from farmers and tribals whose lands are to be acquired.

"This government is of the common man. Like you asked now, yes, we will review the bullet train (project). Have I stayed the bullet train project like Aarey car shed? No, I haven't," Thackeray told reporters here late Sunday night.

India: LS members raise issue of rising rape cases in country

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) Members in Lok Sabha on Monday spoke against recent cases of rapes in various parts of the country, including the one of a young veterinarian in Hyderabad.

India: Three tanneries caught running in Jajmau

Kanpur: Three tanneries were found to be running in the raid conducted by the pollution control board and the district administration at Jajmau area on Sunday night. 

Earlier as many as four tanneries were caught in running position. 

The national green tribunal has expressed deep concern over the running of tanneries despite state govt's order to keep them closed. In the absence of the treatment plant, how can the tanneries run? The officers concerned acted upon action owing to the NGT's annoyance.

India plans to invest $1.39 trillion in infrastructure to spur economy

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India will unveil a series of infrastructure projects this month as part of a plan to invest 100 trillion rupees ($1.39 trillion) in the sector over the next five years, the finance minister said on Saturday, in a push to improve the country’s economy.

Nirmala Sitharaman’s comments, as cited in local newspapers, followed data released on Friday that showed India’s economic growth slowed to 4.5% in the July-September quarter - its weakest pace since 2013 - upping the pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to speed reforms.

India: Aamir Khan visits Golden Temple

Amritsar, Nov 30 (PTI) Superstar Aamir Khan paid obeisance at the Golden Temple here on Saturday.

Khan sat in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple and spent around 50 minutes listening to religious hymns sung by Sikh priests, an official of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) said.

SGPC Chief Secretary Roop Singh remained with Khan in the marbled periphery of the Golden Temple.

India: Assam govt has no info on people excluded from NRC list

Guwahati, Nov 30 (PTI) Two days after senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the figure of Hindu Bengalis excluded from the updated final NRC would be tabled in the Assembly, the Assam government on Saturday said it has no information of those left out of the controversial document.

In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Nurul Huda in the Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said the Office of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator has not shared the data of 19,06,657 excluded people with the state government.

India: Woman from Karnataka raped in U'khand's Tehri

Tehri, Nov 30 (PTI) A woman from Karnataka was allegedly raped by a truck driver in Uttarakhand's Tehri district, a police official said on Saturday.

The 28-year-old woman ran away from her home in Karnataka after a fight with her family, Sub Inspector Kandisaur Surendra Singh Rawat said.

According to a complaint lodged by the woman with Kandisaur Police, she was raped by the truck driver who had given her a lift, Rawat said, adding that the driver later dumped her somewhere on the way.

India: UP man gets 20 years in jail for raping minor daughter

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Dec 1 (PTI) A special court here awarded a 20-year jail term to a 50-year-old man for raping his minor daughter three years ago.

The court, set up under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, convicted the man on Saturday.

Judge Sanjiv Kumar Tiwari also imposed a fine of Rs 56,000 on him after holding him guilty of raping his 17-year-old daughter in 2016.

India: Women feel unsafe in Bhopal, Gwalior, Jodhpur: study

New Delhi, Dec 1 (PTI) Nearly 90 per cent women feel unsafe in Bhopal, Gwalior and Jodhpur due to isolated and unsafe areas, according to a study which also found that students and unmarried women were more vulnerable to sexual harassment

The study was conducted by social enterprises Safetipin, government organisation KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) and NGO Asia Foundation.
