Indian police shoot dead rape suspects as they try to flee

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Police in the southern Indian state of Telangana on Friday shot dead four suspects who had been arrested over a gang rape and murder case that caused a national furore.

There has been public anger across the country since the burnt body of the 25-year-old rape victim, a veterinarian by profession, was found last month near Hyderabad.

The gruesome details of the crime provoked massive anger in the country, where more than 100 rapes happen daily.

Indian police fatally shoot 4 suspects in gang-rape case

SHADNAGAR, India (AP) — Four men suspected of raping and killing a woman in southern India were fatally shot by police Friday, a police official said.

The men were killed around 3:30 a.m., according to Priya, a police sub-inspector in Hyderabad who goes by one name.

Another police official said the suspects tried to grab an officer’s firearm and escape during a visit to the crime scene. That officer spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

India: Girl gangraped by four men in UP's Firozabad

Firozabad (UP), Dec 4 (PTI) A 20-year-old girl was gangraped by four men and thrown at a secluded spot in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, hailing from neighbouring Agra, was on her way to a coaching centre situated under the Hari Parvat police station area.

The accused told the victim that her brother had met with an accident and asked her to accompany them in their car. They then took her to Atamadpur where she was gangraped, SP, City Prabal Pratap Singh said.

India: Jailed rape victim granted bail

Allahabad, Dec 5 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday granted bail to the law student charged with trying to extort money from Swami Chinmayanand, the BJP leader whom she has accused of rape.

Chinmayanand, whose trust runs the Shahjahanpur law college where the woman studied, was arrested under section 376-C of the IPC and continues to be in judicial custody.

Mega rally planned in India about economic crisis, unemployment, inflation

Jammu, Dec 4 (PTI) The Congress will take out a mega rally in Delhi on December 14 to protest against the state of the economy, unemployment and unprecedented price hike due to the wrong policies of the BJP government at the Centre, a party leader said here on Wednesday.

"The Congress is organising a mega rally in Delhi on December 14 to protest against the economic crisis, large-scale unemployment and unprecedented price hike," the chief spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) said.

India: UNICEF organises seminar on child trafficking

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) In an attempt to create awareness about child trafficking, the UNICEF organised a seminar on trafficking in India and South Asia here recently.

The seminar, which was attended by Queen Silvia of Sweden, discussed imperative issues such as sexual exploitation of children, forced labour, organ removal, bonded labour, domestic servitude, child marriage, illegal adoption, and pornography.

India: Onion price soars to Rs 120 a kg in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Dec 4 (PTI) Amid the onion prices soaring to Rs 120 a kg in open markets of the state, the Odisha government on Wednesday sought to provide succour to people, saying the cost of the pungent vegetable bulb is likely to decline by January first week after production of new crop.

While the onion price in open market was around Rs 90 a kilogram on Tuesday, it registered an overnight jump by Rs 30 in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
