India: Govt working on more measures to boost economy: FM

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the government is working on more measures to revive the sagging economy.

The GDP growth slowed down to more than six-year low of 4.5 per cent in the second quarter of the current fiscal from 5 per cent recorded in the first quarter.

The government has taken several measures during August and September to boost the economy, she said at the HT Leadership Summit here.

India: UP becoming country's rape capital

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The Congress party on Saturday demanded strict action against the accused in the Unnao case, saying the Uttar Pradesh government has to wake up to realise that the state is becoming the rape capital of the country.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Srimate said responsibility in the Unnao case lies at the "doorstep" of the UP government where law and order has completely collapsed.

"We demand strict action in the matter. The UP government has to wake up to realise that the state is becoming the rape capital of the country," she said.

India: Third accused in Puri gang rape arrested

Puri, Dec 7 (PTI) The third accused in the case of alleged gang rape of a girl in Puri town of Odisha has been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The accused, who was absconding since the incident happened on December 2, was arrested on Friday night from a village under Brahmagiri police station area, they said.

Over 400 youths from J-K inducted into Army

Srinagar, Dec 7 (PTI) Over 400 freshly-trained youths from Jammu and Kashmir were on Saturday recruited into the Army at a passing-out-parade here, the first such parade of the force after the erstwhile state became the Union territory.

The passing-out-parade of the soldiers, belonging to different areas of Jammu and Kashmir, was conducted at the regimental centre of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) at Rangreth in the outskirts of the city here, an Army official said.

Indian woman who alleged gang-rape dies after burn attack

NEW DELHI (AP) — An alleged rape victim in northern India set on fire on her way to a court hearing in the case she filed died in a hospital in New Delhi, officials said Saturday.

The woman was attacked by a group of men in the state of Uttar Pradesh, including two of the five men she had accused of gang-rape last year who were out of custody on bail.

Five men were arrested in connection with the burn attack.

India: Worrisome that people have lost faith in justice system: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said while the people of the country are rejoicing the encounter deaths of the four accused in the gang rape and murder case of the Hyderabad veterinarian, it is also worrisome that they have lost faith in the justice system.

"The rape cases that have come to light of late, people are in anger whether it is Unnao or Hyderabad, so people are expressing happiness over the encounter.

India: FIR against 9 for trying to rape law student in UP

Bareilly (UP), Dec 6 (PTI) An FIR has been registered against nine persons, two of them unidentified, for allegedly trying to rape a law student in Izatnagar area here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday evening when the girl was returning home after appearing in an examination. Some persons stopped her scooter and tried to drag her near a brick kiln, the girl said in her complaint to police.

India: Elderly man gored to death by bull in MP

Jabalpur (MP), Dec 5 (PTI) A 70-year-old man was gored to death by a bull at a farm in Chattarpur village near here on Thursday, police said.

The deceased, Sudershan Patel, worked as a farm caretaker, they said.

"After placing fodder at the farm, Patel turned to go when the bull charged at him from behind and impaled him with horns. He suffered multiple grievous injuries in the attack and died on the spot," Barela Police Station in-charge, inspector Sushil Chouhan, said.

India: UP rape victim airlifted to Delhi

Lucknow, Dec 5 (PTI) The rape victim who was set on fire by five men in Unnao was airlifted to Delhi hospital on Thursday evening.

The woman who sustained 90 per cent burn injuries and was in a "very serious" condition was taken to Delhi's Safdarjung hospital by an air ambulance, Lucknow Commissioner Mukesh Meshram told PTI.
