Qatar's emir, Algeria's president discuss ties, common interests

26 June 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune discussed the bilateral relations and issues of common importance Saturday with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, according to the Qatari news agency, Anadolu Agency reports.

The meeting was at the presidential residence in Oran, it said.

Algeria suspends tourism ties with Spain amid tension

20 June 2022; MEMO: Algeria suspended all tourism ties with Spain on Monday in a new escalation of tension between the two countries over the disputed Western Sahara region, Anadolu News Agency reports.

A document dated 19 June by the Algerian Tourism Ministry asked all tour operators to immediately suspend tourism relations with Spain. The document said the suspension was part of Algeria's decision to suspend a friendship treaty with Madrid.

Algeria to strengthen industrial cooperation with Moscow

18 June 2022; MEMO: Algeria intends to strengthen its partnership with Russia in the industrial and commercial fields in light of the country's adoption of a new investment law providing greater incentives for industrial projects. This comes at a time when the Ukrainian Embassy in Algeria has appealed to Algerian companies to withdraw from the Russian market, offering promises of compensation if they move to invest in Ukraine.

Algeria, China sign contract to build petrochemical plant

21 May 2022; MEMO: The Algerian state-owned oil company Sonatrach announced on Thursday that it signed a contract with a Chinese factory to build a petrochemical plant in the state of Oran, at a value of 76 billion Algerian dinars ($542 million).

Sonatrach confirmed in a statement that the plant would produce methyl tert-butyl ether, which is added to the fuel to improve its quality and obtain unleaded gasoline.

Algerian President seeks increase in Turkish investments

18 May 2022; MEMO: Algeria's president has confirmed his confidence that Turkish investments in his country will reach $10 billion and more within a short time, Anadolu has reported. Abdelmadjid Tebboune made his comment during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday after their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Ankara.

Russia FM visits Algeria to discuss Ukraine, Libya crises

10 May 2022; MEMO: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Algeria today for a visit during which he will discuss the Ukrainian and Libyan crises, the situation in the Middle East and developments in energy markets.

Sources said Lavrov will be received by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and hold talks with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

The sources also noted that the officials will discuss "strategic bilateral relations and international and regional developments."

Algeria completes oil refinery project

28 April 2022; MEMO: Algeria has completed work on a crude oil refining project in Hassi Messaoud, the largest oil city in the country, to pump 60,000 barrels per day. state-owned Sonatrach said today.

The statement stated that the CEO, Taoufik Hakkar, yesterday travelled to the southeastern city of Hassi Messaoud, and visited the project, which he said was now 99 per cent complete and able to process 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil.

Algeria reiterates support for Libya's Dbeibah government

25 April 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune yesterday renewed his support for the Libyan government led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

"Dbeibeh's government possesses international legitimacy," Tebboune told reporters in Algiers, adding that his country would not "host a summit that deliberates a conflict over legitimacy between Dbeibeh's government and the government of Fathi Bashagha."

Algerian, Russian presidents discuss ties, Russia-Ukraine conflict over phone

ALGIERS, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, held a phone conversation on Monday, exchanging views over bilateral cooperation as well as a series of regional issues.

According to a statement from the Algerian Presidency, Tebboune and Putin discussed the forthcoming bilateral economic cooperation and pledged to further exchange high-level visits.

The two presidents also talked about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the escalating tensions between Palestine and Israel.

Algeria reports no new daily case for 1st time since COVID-19 outbreak

ALGIERS, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian Health Ministry said on Sunday that no new COVID-19 cases were reported over the past 24 hours for the first time since the outbreak of the disease two years ago.

The overall number of cases stabilized at 265,739, and the death toll remained at 6,874, while the number of recoveries reached 178,335, according to the ministry.

Algeria registered its highest 2,521 daily infections on Jan. 25, 2022, while a record daily death toll of 49 was reported on July 28, 2021.
