Algeria, Morocco bid to host 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

3 October 2022; MEMO: Regional rivals Algeria and Morocco plan to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Guinea was stripped of the right to organise the football tournament.

Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports, Abderrazak Sebgag, said the North African country will apply to host the prestigious continental competition, which only Algeria hosted once in 1990.

Algeria inflation rate rises to 9.6%

29 Sep 2022; MEMO: The inflation rate in Algeria increased to 9.6 per cent at the end of August, amid the rise in the prices of basic commodities globally and its impact on local markets, Anadolu reported.

Deputy Director-General of the Algerian National Office of Statistics, Hamid Zaydouni, revealed the rate during a hearing at the Finance Committee of the People's National Assembly.

The Algerian market recorded an inflation rate of 7.23 per cent during 2021, the highest in nearly three years.

Algeria calls for granting Palestine full UN membership

27 Sep 2022; MEMO: Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra yesterday expressed his country's support for granting Palestine full membership at the United Nations General Assembly, seconding the request made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last week. Palestine currently holds Observer Status.

Addressing the Palestinian question "is the main key to restoring security and stability in the Middle East,"  Lamamra said in New York during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Palestine is 'national issue' for Algeria: Tebboune

26 Sep 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said yesterday that "Palestine is a national issue" for his country, pointing out that "there is no Algerian young or elderly who does not support Palestine."

In a meeting with Algerian governors, Tebboune said: "We do not accept Palestine to be occupied," adding that "we will continue supporting it even if it was occupied by the world's strongest power."

"Palestine is for Palestinians, not for others," he stressed.

Algeria launches bid for UN Security Council

22 Sep 2022; MEMO: Algeria yesterday launched a campaign to promote its candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the term 2024-2025.

Elections are due to be held during the 77th General Assembly session in June 2023.

This came amid increasing demands for reforming the Security Council and breaking major countries' influence over its decisions.

Fatah, Hamas head to Algeria to discuss Palestinian reconciliation

20 Sep 2022; MEMO: Delegations from Fatah and Hamas have headed to Algeria to discuss ways to end the division and achieve Palestinian unity.

Fatah said in a statement yesterday that its delegation left for Algeria at the invitation of the North African state's leadership within the framework of joint coordination on challenges facing the Palestinian cause and strengthening national unity within the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Wafa reported.

Algeria will share its 'extensive experience' in gas with Mauritania: PM

15 Sep 2022; MEMO: Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane said yesterday that Algeria will share its vast gas experience with Mauritania as part of the two countries' bilateral cooperation.

This came in a speech that Benabderrahmane gave to mark the conclusion of the 19th session of the Great Algerian-Mauritanian Joint Higher Committee for Cooperation.

Algeria, France sign declaration for ‘renewed partnership’

27 August 2022; AA: Algeria and France on Saturday signed a declaration for "renewed partnership" at the end of French President Emmanuel Macron's 3-day visit to the North African nation, according to local media.

Macron and Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune signed the declaration in the capital Algiers for a "new, irreversible dynamic of progress" in the relations between the two countries, the state news agency APS reported.
