France: Manslaughter ‘not enough’ say family of delivery driver killed by police in Paris

17 July 2020; MEMO: Three French police officers have been charged with manslaughter of a delivery driver after a coroner ruled he died of asphyxia and a broken larynx.

Police stopped 42-year-old father of five, Cedric Chouviat, of Algerian origin, who was riding on his scooter near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, in January.

Footage reviewed by investigators shows him shouting “I’m suffocating” seven times whilst officers held him down, still wearing his helmet.

India: Peasant leade Akhil Gogoi gets bail in 3 cases lodged by Assam Police

Guwahati, Jul 16 (PTI) Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi was on Thursday granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in three cases lodged by the Assam Police in connection with the violent anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in December last year.

However, he will remain in jail for the cases being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Hearing the bail applications in the three cases registered at Chabua police station in Dibrugarh district, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak granted bail to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader.

23 EU countries stand with Palestine against annexation: PA

16 July 2020; MEMO: Nabil Shaath, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ close aide, announced on Wednesday that 23 European Union (EU) countries stand with Palestine against the Israeli plan to annex large swathes of occupied West Bank, Al Watan Voice reported.

The only two European states which have not yet announced their stance are Austria and Czech Republic.

Court rules ‘Daesh bride’ Shamima Begum allowed to return to the UK

16 July 2020; MEMO: Shamima Begum, a UK woman who joined Daesh in 2015 as a teenager, has today won her appeal to be allowed to return to the UK.

Dubbed a “Daesh bride” for having left the UK to marry a member of Daesh, British-born Shamima was 15 years old at the time of her departure. She was stripped of her British citizenship on national security grounds four years later.
