Lebanon politician calls for expelling Palestine refugees

21 July 2020; MEMO: Leader of the Lebanese Free Patriotic Movement and former Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil on Sunday called for expelling Palestinian refugees from the country, Arab48 reported.

After a meeting with the Maronite Patriarch, Mar Bechara Al Rahi, Bassil said that Lebanon would be able to be neutral if it expelled “explosive opponents” in the country.

He pointed out that the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are part of these “explosive opponents” and they should be forced out.

India: Woman strangled to death by in-laws over dowry in UP

Etah (UP), Jul 21 (PTI) A 28-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her in-laws over dowry in Sattarpur village here on Tuesday, police said.

Kiran Devi's in-laws fled after killing her, they said.

Victim's father Ajab Singh alleged that his daughter was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws and they had killed her, the police said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, they said.

An investigation has been launched. No arrests have been made so far.

India: Pawar's Ayodhya temple remark is against Lord Ram: Uma Bharti

Sehore (MP), Jul 20 (PTI) BJP vice president and former Union minister Uma Bharti on Monday termed a remark made by NCP chief Sharad Pawar on the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya as "Bhagwan Ram drohi" (anti Lord Ram).

Pawar on Sunday said some people think building a temple will help get rid of the COVID-19 pandemic, a day after the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust suggested two dates in August for laying the foundation stone for a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

India: Dalit man stripped, thrashed in Karnataka

Vijayapura (Karnataka), July 20 (PTI) A Dalit man was stripped and thrashed by a group of people in this district in Karnataka for allegedly touching the motorbike of another community member, police said on Monday.

As a video of the incident went viral on social media, a counter-complaint was lodged, claiming he was assaulted for teasing two girls of Minajagi village, a police official said.

Two people had been arrested and further investigation was on into both complaints, District Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said.

US sanctions Chinese companies over Muslim abuse complaints

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government has imposed trade sanctions on 11 companies it says are implicated in human rights abuses in China’s Muslim northwestern region of Xinjiang.

Monday’s announcement adds to U.S. pressure on Beijing over Xinjiang, where the ruling Communist Party is accused of mass detentions, forced labor and other abuses against Muslim minorities.

Xinjiang is among a series of conflicts including human rights, trade and technology that have caused U.S.-Chinese relations to plunge to their lowest level in decades.

UK: Charity slams UK’s inaction to save British children in Syria camps

20 July 2020; MEMO: The UK home office was slammed for its “alarming inaction” as it faces accusations it has made no attempt to return British children from war-torn Syria.

Save the Children said that nothing has been done in the past eight months to bring British children trapped in Syria to safety, despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson describing the repatriation of children as a “great success”.

USA: Thousands to walk off job to protest racial inequality

New York, Jul 20 (AP/PTI) Organisers of a national workers strike say tens of thousands are set to walk off the job Monday in more than two dozen US cities to protest systemic racism and economic inequality that has only worsened during the coronavirus pandemic.

Dubbed the Strike for Black Lives, labor unions, along with social and racial justice organisations from New York City to Los Angeles, will participate in a range of planned actions.

India: Film producer accused of sexual assault

Kochi, July 19 (PTI): A case has been registered against a Malayalam film producer for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, police said on Sunday.

Alwyn Antony had sexually abused the 22-year-old woman last year after promising her roles in his movies, the police said.

The accused is absconding, they said.
