India: Will continue struggle for restoration of Article 370, resolution of Kashmir issue: Mehbooba

Srinagar, Oct 14 (PTI) Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who was released from detention after 14 months, has vowed to continue her struggle for the restoration of Article 370 and the resolution of the Kashmir issue.

She said the Centre's decision of August 5 was a "daylight robbery".

India: UP govt trying to save culprits of Hathras rape, murder: AAP MP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 13 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh on Tuesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of trying to save the culprits in the Hathras case and demanded that the CBI inquiry be monitored by the Supreme Court.

Singh, who was in Muzaffarnagar for a party meeting, told reporters that the state government was trying to weaken the case by "destroying" evidence.

Kashmir: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti released by Indian Administration

Srinagar, Oct 13 (PTI) PDP president and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti was released on Tuesday night as the Union Territory administration revoked the Public Safety Act charges against her, more than a year after she was detained following the abrogation of special status of the erstwhile state.

The development came barely two days before the Supreme Court was to hear the matter related to her detention.

Greece to build a permanent refugee camp to replace Moria by mid-2021

13 Oct 2020; MEMO: Greece will build a permanent refugee camp on Lesbos by summer 2021 to replace the facility that burned down last month, the migration minister said yesterday.

Notis Mitarachi said contractors had already been selected to construct the new camps, which will also be built on the islands of Samos, Kos and Leros.

The camps will be closed facilities, with “NATO-style double enclosure” and tightly controlled entry, as well as fire protection systems, Mitarachi said.

Hollywood's Mark Ruffalo calls out Israel's apartheid

13 Oct 2020; MEMO: Hollywood A-lister Mark Ruffalo called out Israeli apartheid during an interview on the Mehdi Hasan Show aired yesterday.

Speaking to the British journalist, Ruffalo said: “My connection to Palestine came through Palestinians and hearing their stories and then watching this asymmetrical warfare being enacted upon them.”

“That kind inequality, that kind of oppression, that kind of apartheid.”

India: Ex-SC judge laments 'weaponising' sedition law

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur on Monday lamented "weaponising" the sedition law, adding one of the worst forms of curtailment of freedom of speech is charging a person with sedition.

Observing that law is being misused to curb free press and speech, the retired judge said a lethal cocktail" of use and misuse of law is being used to impact adversely the liberty of all those who dare to speak up.

For third consecutive Friday, Israel prevents Palestinians from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque

11 Oct 2020; MEMO: The Israeli occupation police have prevented Palestinians from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque and performing Friday prayer for the third consecutive week, Anadolu Agency reported.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the Israeli occupation police were deployed at the outer entrances of Jerusalem’s Old City and prevented every Palestinian from entering into the area.

Only Palestinian residents of the Old City were allowed to enter the mosque and perform Friday prayer.

PA asks Qatar to mediate for Israel to end unpaid tax revenues crisis

11 Oct 2020; MEMO: As the financial situation of the Palestinian Authority (PA) worsens, the PA asked Qatar to mediate for Israel to help end the crisis of unpaid tax revenues, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Friday.

An informed source told the London-based newspaper that PA officials met Qatari officials in Doha and discussed the issue of unpaid tax revenues estimated at over a billion US dollars.

India: Catholic union calls for Father Stan's release arrested by NIA

Mangaluru, Oct 10 (PTI): The All India Catholic Union (AICU) on Saturday called for the immediate release of 83- year-old Jesuit priest Fr Stan Swamy, who was arrested from Ranchi, Jharkhand, in an operation by the NIA and now in judicial custody.

The century-old AICU, which represents 1.6 crore ordinary catholics in the country, expressed apprehension over the arrest of Stan by saying that the action on the ailing activist was a plan to silence dissent and protest against alienation of the natural and forest resources of the tribals.

India: CBI takes over Hathras gangrape murder case probe

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The CBI registered an FIR early Sunday morning and took over investigation into the alleged gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman last month in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The central probe agency registered the FIR under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to gangrape and murder among others, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
